May 20, 2015 The Patriot Act provisions that have allowed the National Security Agency to vacuum up Americans' phone records officially expire on June 1. But the Obama administration says the NSA must begin preparing to end its bulk-telephone-spying program as soon as Friday.

A Justice Department memo circulated among congressional offices Wednesday and obtained by National Journal said Congress needs to fully settle its differences over the expiring spy provisions this week in order to avoid an operational interruption to the NSA's mass-surveillance program, which was exposed by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden two years ago.

"After May 22, 2015, the National Security Agency will need to begin taking steps to wind down the bulk-telephone-metadata program in anticipation of a possible sunset in order to ensure that it does not engage in any unauthorized collection or use of the metadata," the memo states.

So what are they going to due with all those huge data centers they built in Utah? The estimated 30K employees? Maybe the NSA could go after people who send spam. I'd like my inbox cleaned up!

Forget the spammers. Find the virus-writers and send out the SEALs.

Oh, great. Now he's killing tens of thousands of jobs and giving a free pass to terrorists.

Thanks, Obama.

I figure the virus-writers are just NSA employees moonlighting.
Moonlighting?
There's probably an entire budget for that.
"There's a computer in Wisconsin with protection SO GOOD it keeps our viruses out."
"Huh. Why would someone in Wisconsin need protection good enough to keep the NSA out? Better send some agents in to poke around...."

In yur dreams is this program going to stop.
It only took the socialist commie 6+ years to stop the program. Of course I trust the Government to stop it now.

When your government outright lies to you and you find out that has been happening for real, how can you trust it about ANYTHING? There is no doubt a slush fund...you know, the proverbial "pot of money" lying around somewhere for covert operations that will just suddenly go into action. Once things like NSA get going, it appears NOTHING CAN STOP IT. They will just relabel it and keep on keeping on.

Accidentally release the data to marketers with the highest campaign contributions and the employees will be retained to sit and do nothing as per their contract which doesn't expire until June 2018. I don't understand it either. It's just one of those crazy government things. Sorry. We'd love to let them go but hey, 30k employees averaging 110k a year plus whatever they can claim in travel/per diem for training to maintain their skills, maybe go watch an OPSEC video in Waikiki, have a conference in lieu of of a phone conversation in Bar Harbor. And the ones with blanket purchase credit cards... well, what part of blanket purchase don't you understand?

You DO know the spying is not going to stop don't you? Isn't it about time you replaced your computer, your cell phone and your automobile? That's what YOUR information says here at information central...time for your annual physical...where does it stop? I don't think it will be stopping. I don't think it will stop leaking... Electronic communications is a leaky bucket of worms and they will not let the fusion centers die even though they are completely unmanageable. The people in that line of work value money too much.

Which is why we need to make sure that computer code and programs are never restricted to "authorized professionals only". Source code should be treated like free speech. Check this thread I just started.
