I began to see outlines of the incident unfold from there; a limping Black figure, wearing black, increasingly cornered by a wall of blue. By the time I had crossed 8th street, I was pulling out my phone as fast as I could.

Witnesses said there had been a call about somebody waving sticks around. No one, at least no one that I stayed long enough after the filming, could say for sure where the call came from. One woman said that she heard someone say that one of the deli owners/managers called. By the time I arrived where Joe Bland was (as we’ll call him), several officers had arrived on the scene, and forced this man to the ground, which is where this footage begins. And they held him down, much of the time half-naked, for at least half an hour on one of San Francisco’s busiest streets.

The sticks? They were his crutches. You can hear people in the background around say so much. From my vantage point on the shore of 8th street, I could see the man reluctantly hand over his crutches.

Are those cops really dumb, do they just not have any clue?
Or are they unable to think for themselves or somehow take some initiative? They even congratulate themselves on a job well done.
Do they just enter into some insane mental space once they put a uniform on?

So what if they are crutches. That doesn't mean he can't also use them for offensive purposes. We don't have proof of wrongdoing here.

That's a terrific parody. You know, there is a guy called Loren Pechtel, on one of the Internet discussion boards I frequent, who actually says things just like this (well, perhaps not quite so extreme). It's like he seriously can't help but defend any action by police, no matter how horrifying.

The problem is you guys simply assume the police are always wrong and never consider that there might be a reasonable explanation for what happened.

Note that the cops were called because he was waving them around. It sounds like the cops were disarming him of the weapons he was using as part of arresting him, the fact that he needed them to walk was immaterial to that.

Wow. Hard to believe even you believe what you post with that one.

It should not take more than one, at a pinch two cops to restrain a crippled man, regardless of how excited he may be. Instead of pinning him to the ground for 10 minutes, they could have led him to a seat, or in a car, sat him down and held him there till he had calmed down. Talking to him like he was a human being would have helped too. They could also have called the assistance of a paramedic if they felt he was mentally unbalanced or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Instead, they wrestle him to the ground like some dangerous animal, pin him down by sitting on top of him for 10 minutes and make zero effort to respect his dignity. A dozen cops to restrain one cripple! How brave of them! Give them a medal!

Fascists.
