OT anecdote:

I grew up in the mountains in the western US, and despite being surrounded by pine trees, I had never heard the expression "pine straw" until a couple of years ago when I was traveling in Georgia.

To me, they had always been "pine needles." And they had always been a worthless fire hazard. It baffled my mind to discover that the sold for such a high price out on the East coast.
