Vatican shows proof that it sacked 848 'priests' who raped or molested children and that it punished another 2,572 who were suspected of being pedophiles.

Pope Benedict XVI alone sacked 384 in two years!!!

The Vatican's U.N. ambassador in Geneva, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, released the figures during a second day of grilling by a U.N. committee monitoring implementation of the U.N. treaty against torture.

Premise - True Christians stick together and support their True Christian clergy. (A house divided against itself cannot stand.)
Premise - These filthy, ungodly pedophiles masquerading as clergy who were sacked are neither wanted nor supported.
Conclusion - Therefore they weren't True Christian clergy (otherwise they would have been allowed to stay.)

Good for him. How many of the people who covered up pedophilia did he fire?

Also, I missed the part where the article talked about how he gave the information about these hundreds of crimes to the local authorities so the criminals could be prosecuted. I don't think that losing your job is an appropriate punishment for raping a child.

True christians don't snitch to the cops, apparently.

Names and prison sentences? Or did they just shuffle them off to a new place anonymously so they can do it again, like last time.

Moreover - 284? Wow that’s a lot of pedophiles in 2 years. How’d they hire them? Oh! Are you admitting that the Catholic church did nothing with the informaton they learned in BOston and hose people were still there from the LAST time the church protected them?

That’s what it took for the vatican to do something? Hiding the sackings to protect the abusers was the original plan? Great “transcendent morals” there, eh?

Fact: church stuck together and protected them from prosecution until they were forced to admit under a court grilling to admit that they had 284 pedophiles.

Fact: pedophelia is not “ungodly”. Mary was made pregnant by god at 14yo.

Oh, they were true christians. They didn’t get excommunicated, they just lost their jobs. Anonymosly, quietly, protected.

Also, you still on this kick that Christianity means being without sin rather than just believing in Jesus? You think these guys don’t believe in Jesus? Or are you trying to claim that only those who don’t sin are welcome by jesus? You claiming that you’re without sin?

“GENEVA -- The Vatican revealed Tuesday that over the past decade, it has defrocked 848 priests who raped or molested children and sanctioned another 2,572 with lesser penalties,” ... “The latest spike began in 2010, when 464 cases were reported, more than twice the amount in 2009. Starting in that same year, the Vatican began resorting more and more to the lesser penalty of sentencing accused priests to a lifetime of penance and prayer rather than defrocking them”

Oh, woot. Take a ppriest who has vowed a lifetime of prayer and sentence him to a lifetime of prayer.
You go, Lion. That is so... justice-y.

I guess that means that King David wasn't a True Jew (faith wise) either...

The Vatican in 2001 required bishops and religious superiors to forward all credible cases of abuse to Rome for review after determining that they were shuffling pedophile priests from diocese to diocese rather than subjecting them to church trials. Only in 2010 did the Vatican explicitly tell bishops and superiors to also report credible cases to police where local reporting laws require them to.

So after generations of institutional sexual abuse and deliberate cover-ups, the church - two thousand years after JC allegedly walked the Earth - finally got around to admitting that maybe this was a bad look for them. Then, after nearly another decade of abuse and cover-ups, finally got around to admitting that maybe some of this might just be criminal, and they sternly fired a tiny percentage of those naughty, naughty boys.

That's a win for Team Jesus for sure!

The Vatican statistics are notable in that they show how the peaks in numbers over the years - both of cases reported and sanctions meted out - roughly parallels the years in which abuse scandals were in the news. And they showed that far from diminishing in recent years, the number of cases reported annually to the Vatican has remained a fairly constant 400 or so since 2010, the last year the scandal erupted in public around the globe.

Funny how these supposed pinnacles of godly ethics seem to act expeditiously against sexual molestation of children only when public outrage against them peaks.

This is consistent with the unequivocal fact that the gods of the reliigions NEVER act. Only the people in the all-too-human institutions act, and usually in very humanly predictable ways.

The whole thing is a fraud, and always has been.

True christians don't snitch to the cops, apparently.

The "information" in most cases is useless to prosecutors because it's hearsay. The bishop heard it from a priest who heard it from a parishioner who heard it from a relative who heard it from an alleged victim.

Strange that here in a forum full of self-professed rational skeptics, so many folks lack an understanding that police and the courts need evidence, proof, etc. And yet here you are presuming that secular authorities will simply hear and believe.

The outrage peaks? LOL

When we're talking about cases dating back to the 50's 60's 70's the urgency of public outrage doesn't strike me as very sincere.

Right. They all deserve their day in court. They will not, however, get that day in court unless the organization which has the information about those crimes provides this information to the authorities so that it can be investigated to see whether or not there is sufficient evidence to proceed.

Out of those 384 cases which you’re so proud of where the Church felt they had sufficient evidence to terminate employment, how many of them had this evidence turned over to the police so they could see if it was also enough to warrant criminal charges? Was it closer to 384 or closer to zero?

Note: They did not say they terminated employment. Only that they are no longer Priests. AS far as we know. According to their statement. But the parishioners have not asked for verification of even that. No one knows who they are, so how does anyone know they even got defrocked?

I feel much better now, so do all the victims.
