Harry Potter's greatest feat might not have been defeating Voldemort, but teaching young people around the world to battle prejudice. At least that's the finding of a new paper in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, which claims reading the Harry Potter series significantly improved young peoples' perception of stigmatized groups like immigrants, homosexuals or refugees.

Hey! Who's that guy on the left? What's he doing in there? Send him back wherever he came from!

Yeah, she's a mudblood, so there's your daily dose of tolerance education.

To summarize, the effects seem to to require that the books be read within the formal context of a literature class in which the students are led by the teacher in an explicit exploration of the themes of prejudice in the book, and even then the effects only emerge for readers who strongly identify with Potter's character.

And now we know why conservative Christians hate Harry Potter so much! He's part of the Politically Correct conspiracy to persecute rich white heterosexual males!
