I was searching about the web the other day and ended up googling 'World's Northernmost City'. Came across this:
Retirement at 45, death at 50. Welcome to Norilsk
Fascinating article. The gist is there are enormous mineral mines in the Northern part of Siberia, and so a city exists up there with about 100 000 people in it, only accessible by plane. The weather conditions are extreme, people can't spend much time outside, and because of pollution from the mines disease rates are sky-high.
