Star Trek writer Dorothy Catherine Fontana, commonly abbreviated to D.C. Fontana, recently died.
D. C. Fontana (March 25, 1939 – December 2, 2019) ‘Star Trek’ Writer D.C. Fontana Dies at 80 – Variety has a lot of details on her and her career.
DCF originally wanted to be a novelist, and in her teens, she'd write horror stories featuring her and her friends. She went on to become a secretary, and then a script writer for TV shows. That's how she got involved with the original Star Trek, and she contributed some scripts and rewrites of some other scripts. She also contributed some of the backstory of Spock's family and his homeworld's society.
She wrote for later Star Trek series, and also for various other series, and she was also involved in the Hollywood script-writer union, the Writers Guild of America.
She wrote as D.C. Fontana at first, to avoid giving away her gender and making herself get taken less seriously.
