Roseanne Reboot

I never watched Rosanne back when it was on before. I gave it a try last night, I think I got like one brief chuckle out of it, so I probably won't be watching it anymore. I tend to like comedy shows with a bit more comedy.

Didn't watch. Sick of the characters. She thoroughly demolished the original show all by herself in its last couple of seasons. Also, just a few years back, in her stand-up, she was wise to Republican bullshit, saying, 'How do they get working class people to vote Republican? That's like the chickens voting for Colonel Sanders!' Maybe she's had another of her famous recovered memories and discovered that everyone who supposedly attacked her was a Democrat.

I thought it was pretty fair to both sides, but in today's climate that means it was unfair by not praising ones own side and not thoroughly trashing the other.
Yeah... you don't seem to understand the meaning of the word "fair" here. There seems to be this idea that all opinions are equal and must be treated "fairly", as in given equal mocking or legitimacy.

Thank you for proving my point.

For anybody who hasn't watched it but passes it off as some far right Trumpish propaganda show, here are the primary plot points of the first 2 episodes:

1. Becky is planning to rent out her womb as a surrogate mom. Dan (Rosanne's husband on the show) isn't happy about it but Roseanne is talking him down and all the other characters are on board with it. The mother-to-be who is renting the womb is played by the other actress who used to play Becky on the show, so there is some funny moments where they talk about how they look so much alike etc.

2. Darlene's kid is super effeminate, wears nail polish, etc. That's presented more like a liberal show would do it. The only family member that has a problem with it is Dan, and its only because he's afraid the kid will be picked on or beat up at school. The kid is picked on at school but turns out to be a tough kid and he stands up to the bullies etc.

Nothing about immigration was mentioned. DJ (the youngest kid on the original show) is back with a wife who is serving in the military so not on the show and kid who is black. Roseanne and her sister bicker a little over politics, without one side being presented as stronger or weaker than the other. Prescription drugs are mentioned as being expensive. That's about it.

I found the show mildly amusing, but not good enough for me to want to watch it further. I'm not a sitcom fan.

Prescription drugs are mentioned as being expensive.

Finally watched it (Dish automatically recorded it even though I didn't ask it to...).
Roseanne and whatshisname were both shown to be strung out of a variety of pain killers, BP meds, statins, antidepressants etc. etc.. I don't think it was lost on many that the trumpsuckers of the family were the drugged-up ones. I saw that as a bit of a slam...

You had a point? I thought you just Wagstaff'd it all day.

She is the perfect image of the alt right. Ignorant and given to ridiculous conspiracy theories. All she has to do is play herself.

A true reflection of America, obese parents..

What in the FUCK does weight have to do with any of this? And why would you associate weight with intelligence? WTF?

I heard someone predict that in future episodes, Roseanne will struggle with a painkiller addiction.

Two aging obese parents are a reflection of what we are becomming. Fat unhealthy junkfood eating whiners.

Normalizing obesity is not funny and not good. I see the impact around me in the assisted living facility I am in for rehab.

Heart dusease, amputaions, kidney dialysis. It is no fucking joke. Roseane, get me a beer and a bag of Cheetos...rkght away Dan.

I watched most of the first episode on Hulu.

um...does it become funny at some point? Or rather, does the comedy change in any real way - I can separate art and artist fine, so long as they don't intertwine (love the Cosby show despite Bill Cosby himself being a rapist, but R. Kelly really does sound like he writes songs for underaged girls), but this show simply wasn't at all funny or interesting to me.

This reminds me of an interview of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. They commented that liberals loved it when South Park mocked Republicans/conservatives. But when they mocked liberals the left became apoplectic. Thin skinned.

Sometimes people don't deserve mocking and sometimes they do and since Republicans are worse, mocking both sides equally isn't deserved.

I watched both episodes and got a few good laughs. Its basically what it was back in the 90s. Its a milk toast sort of funny but not great sitcom with a laugh track. Its definitely NOT pro-trump propaganda. Its having a laugh at the whole political spectrum, and isn't even primarily about politics.

I tried Roseanne Barrnold's first sitcom, didn't like it though I quite liked her early stand up. I've seen her get nuttier and nuttier and less and less funny over the decades, so I just didn't bother with the retread. Will continue to watch Mom, and if I want more American sitcom content on working-class women, I'll bingewatch Two Broke Girls.

Archie Bunker would be so popular among the Trump voters these days.
The character might be, but not the show.
The only time Archie wasn't shown as wrong, basically wrong, in the wrong, extremely wrong, was when they were using him to bash Meathead's over-the-top activism. And every season Archie got a little more liberal...

Since the original stars who played Archie and Edith are dead, who do y'all suggest for the next version? :D
Brian Dennehy.
Marina Sirtis as his English wife, a USO entertainer he met while in the service. Asks questions like 'whatever happened to East Virginia?' and 'Why is it called a 'clutch' when I push it with my foot? Shouldn't I be CLUTCHING something?"

Move the show to somewhere in Texas. Archie works for a company that makes body armor for the military.
He's really excited to hear that his daughter (away to college somewhere in the East) has met and fallen in love with a 3-tour vet of Afghanistan and is bringing him home to meet the family. After talking up his new son's exploits and medals he finally meets him and finds that he's black. Archie doesn't give a shit about skin color, but this vet is angry that his body armor failed in combat which is why he has a prosthetic limb... Hates the military, the military industrial complex, and burned his uniform and medals... Votes Green.
Most of the 1st season humor revolves around the fact that Archie is DEEPLY offended by his son-in-law, but tries desperately to explain to everyone that it's the kid's politics, not racism...
Although sometimes they get a little drunk and bond over common experiences they have with the military. "This one time, Gunny looks at me and says..." Then one of their wives catches then and they start shouting at each other about Hillary.

Funny; I have only vaguely heard mention of this 'Archie Bunker' character before, and your description made me think 'Hey, that's basically Alf Garnett'. So I used my Google-Fu, and found that indeed Archie Bunker is the American version of Alf Garnett.

The inspiration for Archie Bunker was Alf Garnett, the character from the BBC1 sitcom Till Death Us Do Part, on which All in the Family was based.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archie_Bunker

Well, it stands to reason, dun'it. Your basic American, your basic American doesn't know original, does 'e? Just copies off us British geniuses, dun'ee?

I honestly cannot imagine Alf Garnett with an American, rather than a cockney, accent.

I've been watching it.

There is politics in it, since there is politics in life. They set it up with Roseanne as a Republican and Jackie as a Democrat to try to have both sides represented. Meanwhile, they show the real problems of a household similar to the one portrayed on TV.

Roseanne and Dan cannot afford all their medications for Roseanne's knee and Dan's back and other stuff. In a recent episode where Darlene didn't want to take a job that would be considered demeaning to women, Dan said that for the full benefits he'd take that job. He was right that the Connor household is one catastrophe away from being destitute. Meanwhile Roseanne does have a painkiller addiction.

DJ is now married to the black woman that as a kid he didn't want to kiss in the school play. He's got a black child. The rest of the family has shown no problem with this. DJ was denied reenlistment in the Army, so far the show hasn't told us why.

Darlene's son is eccentric, and likes to wear feminine clothing. Although Dan has a problem with it, he isn't trying to force him to conform to gender roles. He keeps his gender role opinions to himself and still does his best for his grandson.

One episode started with Roseanne scared of her Yemeni neighbors. Although it is a little tense between them, both sides afraid of the other, Roseanne was furious at the overt racism of a cashier at the supermarket towards her neighbor.

I mostly agree with you. Very, very minor disagreements are not worth mentioning. I think the leftish characters are portrayed as vapid which I don't agree with. I will add that it's not a super stellar show, like, say West World or Game of Thrones or something and the acting isn't 100% believable at times. However, the show hits real issues for real families. For example, I think the whole prescription pill thing is a very real example you gave. I think it's interesting to watch.

I don't know how to feel about it. I liked the Old show well enough (at least until it really jumped the shark when the Conners won the lottery) but I find Rosseane herself obnoxious and very unlikeable. It doesn't help that off show, she continues to perpetuate Trump's fucking nonsense. As far as I'm concerned, we don't need any more Hollywood stars that cannot tell fact from fiction, and that includes Gwyneth Paltrow as well as Roseanne.

Agree.

It's also annoying that her character now is in such stark contrast to her character in the 90's, it feels forced and propagandish.

What the fuck ever. This is not what 'we are becoming'
