Sen. David Perdue Mispronounces Kamala Harris's Name
People Of Color Are Sharing The Meaning Behind Their Names After A GOP Senator Mocked Kamala Harris's Name

"Learn how to say peoples' names correctly. It's part of their identity and doing so is a basic form of respect."

Georgia senator David Perdue is facing backlash for mockingly mispronouncing Sen. Kamala Harris's name at a Trump campaign rally on Friday, with many calling his remarks racist.

"Ka-MAL-a, Ka-MAL-a or Kamala, Kamala, Ka-mala, -mala, -mala, I don't know, whatever," Perdue said as the crowd in Macon, Georgia, burst into cheers and laughter before he introduced President Trump.

...
Perdue's communications director, John Burke, tweeted that the senator "simply mispronounced" Harris's name "and he didn't mean anything by it."

But many expressed doubt that Perdue would mispronounce the name of a colleague who sits on the Senate Budget Committee with him, and has served alongside the Republican lawmaker in the US Senate for years.
Versha Sharma on Twitter: "Imagine if your coworker of nearly 4 years did this to you

Perdue and Kamala Harris have served in the Senate together for that long. The disrespect is intentional." / Twitter

noting
Jon Ossoff on Twitter: "My opponent, GOP Sen. David Perdue of anti-Semitic attack ad infamy, just mocked Sen. Harris' name as "Kamala-mala-mala-whatever" at a Trump rally.

We are so much better than this. https://t.co/9AvoQK4RdN" / Twitter

Chris Murphy on Twitter: "David knows Kamala. He knows how to pronounce her name. This is awful." / Twitter

Naomi Tweyo Nkinsi on Twitter: "I've tweeted about this before and how many immigrants change their name/pronunciation due to mocking or peoples' refusal to pronounce it correctly. Learn how to say peoples' names correctly. It's part of their identity and doing so is a basic form of respect." / Twitter
When we first moved to the U.S., one of my teachers told me that I was pronouncing my own name wrong and it was supposed to be pronounced "Nay-o-me" and basically renamed me. I'm here now to say that my name is actually pronounced "Now-me" as my parents intended. 🧵1/6

I've introduced myself as "Nay-o-me" for so long and never correct people. Outside of my close friends, family, people typically don't pronounce my name correctly, and I never really bothered to do anything about it. 2/6

When I was younger and my parents would correct other kids and adults, I'd actually get made fun of A LOT (by both) because it was "strange" or "hard to pronounce," so I would actually get embarrassed when my parents and friends said my name correctly in public. 3/6

Albert, one of my best friends from high school and my family would always keep pushing me to introduce myself correctly and correct people, but I just never had the confidence and didn't want the hassle. I'm pretty over that now. 4/6

And because I know people will say "Well why is it spelled that way then?" It's only in the US that I've had people pronounce it "Nay-o-me" so I actually don't think it's that unique of a pronunciation worldwide. Also, I didn't pick the spelling. 5/6

TL;DR my name is pronounced "Now-me" not "Nay-o-me"
No worries if you said it wrong, There's a 100% chance I introduced myself wrong because of weird internalized hangups. I'm working on it. 6/6
I must note that "Nay-o-me" is the usual English pronunciation of that name.

Cori Bush on Twitter: "This is just the tip of the iceberg of running for office as a Black woman.

"Your hips are too wide"
"Your braids are unprofessional"
"You don't speak like a Congresswoman"

To all my Black women running for office, you are right just the way you are. PeriodT." / Twitter

Asma Khalid on Twitter: "I agonized over the name to give my kid. Settled on a mouthful - Sulayman. I loved the meaning - “man of peace.”

I was worried - like my name - it would be hard for people to pronounce. But friends and family insisted he would be growing up in a different world ..." / Twitter

Anjali 👑 on Twitter: "Anjali Pronounced “Un ja Lee” or even “on jo Lee.” My name means “Offering” (to God). #Kamala happens to be my grandmother’s name. It means Lotus. Anyway that’s my diatribe for Friday. Pronouncing names shld be a common courtesy. Ask us. https://t.co/ehzhlxVhO5" / Twitter

Krishna Upadhya MD, MPH on Twitter: "#MyNameIs Krishna and I go by Krishna, not Kris or Christina and not “Hairy Krishna” though I have been called all of those. My parents named me after my dad’s beloved younger sister who is an accomplished professor of geography, mother and grandmother 🇳🇵#KamalaHarris #VOTE" / Twitter

Pankaj Kakkar on Twitter: "#mynameis Pankaj. ..." / Twitter
#mynameis Pankaj. Means the same as Senator Harris's name - the lotus flower (though the color Orange is another connotation of the Senator's name). It's roots are Sanskrit. The literal translation is "that which grows (-aj) in mud (Pank-)".

Today I want to tell David perdue and the rest of the GOP that out of the mud of their racist government will grow the beautiful flower of the Biden-Harris administration. So, when Republican Senator David Perdue mocks and mispronounces the name of Kamala Harris - his colleague

of many years - we have only one option: Vote. Them. Out.

What is your name? Please share below in the replies, and also in QTs. Let people know, all of our names are "American" names.

#IWILLVOTE!
Zara Ahmed, DrPH on Twitter: "#MyNameIs Zara. My parents spent a lot of time and energy picking out a name that would be easily pronounceable for non-Indian people. But they shouldn’t have had to do that. It shouldn’t be on POC to shave off pieces of our culture to make life easier for white people." / Twitter

noting
Meena Harris on Twitter: "#MyNameIs Meenakshi. I'm named after the Hindu goddess, as well as my great great grandmother. I come from a long line of strong women who taught me to be proud of my heritage and to demand respect—especially from racist white men like @sendavidperdue who are threatened by us." / Twitter

noting
Gautam Raghavan on Twitter: "My great grandmother’s name was Kamala. Not “Kamala-mala-mala, I don’t know, whatever.”

#MyNameIs Gautam. It means bright light. The kind of bright light a Biden-Harris Administration will represent.

And that is why #IWillVote. Join me & make a plan at https://t.co/M8JYgEwDe2." / Twitter

Noting
Gautam Raghavan on Twitter: "Dear America (read: media): please take note. No one wants to hear "Kuh MAHL Uh" for the next four years." / Twitter

Kamala Harris on Twitter: "People pronounce my name many different ways. Let #KidsForKamala show you how it’s done. https://t.co/7QoQGN0B4k" / Twitter

Well, it worked out well for her because I heard that supporters gave her a million dollars in the first hour after the jerk did that. People are calling what he did racist. To me, it seemed more sexist than racist.

David Purdue. Sonny Purdue is the former governor and current agriculture secretary.
They don't even look alike, even if they are cousins.

But I guess to you, all us white guys look the same. :tonguea:

I would say neither. Just making fun of somebody with a weird name. He'd make fun of a Slavic guy's name with a lot of consecutive consonants or a white guy whose parents were hippies and named him Moon Unit Delta or something.

If he really wanted to make fun of Kamala's name, he missed a golden reference though.

Senator Harris has been in the Senate long enough for even the densest senator to know the correct pronunciation of her name.

Either Senator Perdue is a real moron or he was playing to the typical Trump crowd.

Trump made fun of Harris's name almost exactly the same way in an earlier campaign rally. I think what Purdue was doing was tapping on that meme. The Trump rallies have always been like a sketch show where the audience expects to hear the same stale old catch phrases. "Now do the one about the toilets! Wooo!"

These days a non-white female can always fall back on the "they're racist" or "they're sexist" response whenever she experiences valid criticism or just general joking/mocking. Even if there is no connection whatsoever to gender or race. Like when Kamala dropped out of the primaries, she blamed her poor performance on racism and sexism. It was such an automatic "go to" answer for her, she probably didn't even recognize that she was calling out her own party as a bunch of racists and sexists! And now she expects them all to just roll over and vote for her? :rotfl:

I imagine she expects “them” to vote for Biden.

What explanation(s) would you pisit Democrsts who did not support Harris’s bid for POTUS and sho do not vote for Biden?

Did that on my phone. Sorry about that,

I will rephrase so you will not have to tax your interpretative powers:
What explanation(s) would you posit about Democrats who dod not vote for Biden and how did not support Harris’s bid for POTUS?

Sorry about that, my eyesight is really terrible.
