Some police officers are a real worry

Which means what? That someone having a prior arrest gives cops carte blanche to become Judge Dredd?

Absolute noise.
No, but as someone who does not have prior arrests it makes me less worried. The guy was arrested for burglary.

Which is worse, burglary or assault and battery?

No, police action is not justified. But harassing and road raging off-duty cop is never wise. But then maybe off-duty cop started first, who knows.

It's not only unwise but also illegal, whether or not the person you are harassing is a police officer, off duty or on. No one is claiming that the guy the police officer beat is an angel. But we should all expect police officers to behave with integrity, professionalism, and competence and to follow established police procedures. It doesn't just make their potential victims safer: it makes us all safer.

WTF does that matter?????????????

Taking my wife to the doctor a couple of weeks ago, I opened the garage door to find a car parked across my driveway. A lady nearby told me it was a cop car. I saw an officer looking at cars(it's common for cops and white hats to check registration/inspection stickers). I called out to him. He moved the car, driving down the block and pulling over. I passed him, stopped at the corner stop sign, and turned. He pulled out, pulled me over, claiming a rolling stop. Which was absurd, number one, I knew he was watching, number two I had to let a car pass.

Prick. $138 and three points because I apparently didn't kiss his ass to get him to unblock my driveway.

And then they wonder why people resent them.

It's called a dash cam. Get one.

A dashcam may protect you from retaliation when you take a day off from work to go to court, but isn't really a solution for the core problem Horatio is pointing out.

No: it's called hiring police officers with integrity.

Try it.

Let's get to the irrational - apparently, when the cop was shrieking and yanking on Promvongsa to get him out of the car, Promvongsa still had his seatbelt on. He literally could not just get out of his car immediately. And of course, seat belts are designed to lock up in the case of any violent pull, for safety. Anyone who has yanked on their seat belt in the past...what two decades?...knows this.

This is yet another case where you look at the plain facts, and just say, "this is stupid."

So you admit the necessity of defending oneself against the police.

Sorry but did this Asian guy have his hands on the wheel when the cop approached? If he was fumbling with his papers it could have looked like he was loading an m16 or something. And yeah he did have a cocky urban thing going on with his voice. Sounds pretty gang-like. He isn't dressed for a 9 to 5? Oh I agree. Gang members wear sloppy white t shirts and they have haircuts just like that. I bet the Asian man was blasting gang rap when the cops spotted him.

Here's another close call. This is frightening;

Teh Gruaniad

These lunatics need to be weeded out of the force.

"ACLU said" - they complain a lot, don't they, Swizzle?
Nah - the driver was simply too slow to respond. Of course if he was too fast to respond, that would justify shooting him. Much better let the cop beat the shit outa you.

Seriously though - do you have any ideas about a process that could effectively weed out lunatics?

Take their guns away. See how many of them quit the force as soon as they can no longer hide behind the implicit death threat of a service pistol. Anyone still on the force after six months of unarmed service, give them a taser and a pair of nunchucks. If they prove especially cool under pressure and with an impeccable record of good conduct, they may apply for the police "special weapons service," which is an elite and highly trained branch of the police department that is very well trained in every kind of weapon imaginable.

Basically: move as far as possible away from the "thugs with guns and badges" model of American policing.

Seriously though, listen to reason. Some citizens are a real worry. Cops with a lot of testosterone screw up sometimes because they act on what they see and hear. Guy looked gang bangerish and he was blasting gang music? At least this wannabe gang banger wasn't killed.

Freaking out over every little thing distracts from the actual crimes that go unpunished. Crimes like Dubose/Tensing. That is a real crime, and people are too distracted scraped knees to care.

Actually, no. That's a common misconception--they're not built to lock on a sudden pull. They do sometimes do so but that's because the mechanism isn't perfect.

Rather, the mechanism is designed to lock if it is not level. It's bolted to the car frame in a horizontal position so this translates to whether the car is level or not. I've seen them triggered by very steep terrain but the intended function is when there is substantial acceleration in a horizontal axis.

Are you missing the fact that this wasn't just a traffic stop?

I fully agree this is police wrongdoing but it's not like the guy didn't provoke the cops.
