So I was curious, what is the word on the street about the latest film. I'm pretty much boycotting remakes at this point. I know little about the film, well, nothing other than maybe people are stranded on a planet. JJ Abrams didn't write or direct, so that is a positive gain. But is this film a new movie or a rehash of a previous Star Trek film?

I try to avoid trailers, I read too well into them and that ruins movies for me.

I'll probably watch it, but to be honest, I haven't been all that crazy about the current incarnation of Star Trek. Too "Star Wars-y" for my tastes.

assuming you're talking about star trek: beyond, which is the next film in the rebooted franchise.
it's directed by the guy who directed fast and the furious 2, the trailer is scored by a beastie boys song, and various insiders have commented it is unrecognizable as a star trek property.

I suppose that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Seems like the studio wants a sure thing. Why make $500 million with an honest Star Trek product when you can make $1.0 billion with a cookie cutter approach. I saw Simon Pegg is part of the writing team. It doesn't look like he has written for this sort of project before. Shaun meets Star Trek?

I read that they kind of re-released the trailer without the Beastie Boys song because they wanted to dampen the talk that it's just going to be another Crash! Boom! Zing! Kapow! in space movie, but instead remains true to the franchise.

The first reboot with this cast was pretty good, and the second was pretty watchable too. So hopefully the first trailer from this newest one, which could have been entitled Fast Ships Blowing Shit Up in Space, isn't an indicator about the quality of this film.

They actually released a whole brand new trailer.

It definitely seems more focused on action and appealing to a wider audience. I thought the new reboot was OK. What I'm curious about is the new series. I'm hoping that will be good although I have my doubts. I also don't understand why CBS is releasing the new ST series on their streaming service only. Are they too afraid to take a chance on regular television with the series? Or are they hoping the series will boost their streaming services?

The latter. CBS seems intent on competing with Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon and are using the new Trek series as the hook. The first episode will be broadcast on CBS TV, and they're hoping that will drive subscriptions to CBS All Access. They've also said there's at least 4 other new shows that will debut on the service next year.

They are likely trying to get people to pay for their streaming service. Trekies have proven to be fools with their money relative to Star Trek material.

it also makes a certain amount of sense from a studio perspective, since they've gotten critical and cult darling bryan fuller to be showrunner, and he's always made highly beloved but low rated cult fodder that was quickly cancelled.

Well, it is true that some people will enjoy it just because of the name. If they like it, great. I admit to being pretty easy to please myself when it comes to the franchise, although the latest movies I didn't find that great, and for the love of GOD do we have to use time TIME TRAVEL in every fucking episode? I enjoyed the original series, a few of TOS movies, Next Gen, DS9, Voyager. Even Enterprise some. I have to admit I'm really wary of this attempt though. I'll continue to cross my fingers and hope I'm not disappointed.

Star Trek was originally a tv show, with very episodic structure. Changing that to a movie was not a bad move necessarily, and I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy the new movie as much as I enjoyed the other two. But for me the "real" trek will always be a tv show, be it TOS, TNG, Voyager or Enterprise. The tidbit that it's only on paid streaming service is a good sign, because the business model is different from network TV: they have to have a good show to attract paying customers rather than just appeal to the lowest common denominator to watch ads. So, I'm cautiously optimistic.

(DS9 deliberately left out. That was no Star Trek, nobody trekked anywhere.)

Well, they had a wormhole right next to them and popped through for a visit every now and again.

Well, I'm not paying to get one television series. So I'll wait for reviews and blu-ray.

You mean other than the Gamma Quadrant? In general, DS9 established some new (or slightly pre-existing) races that really weren't at the forefront in TNG. There was more original stuff in DS9 than Voyager which was way the fuck in the middle of nowhere. And oddly enough, despite being one place, it was one of the only series to ever go somewhere with an arc. Voyager really had no arc other than, 'we are heading home instead of starting a new starfleet in the Delta Quadrant'. The episode where they meet Earhart should have been the start of a new base, a new mission. But no... drop the pants and take a dump.. hey, let's bring in the fucking Borg while we are at it. What else could one expect from a series that starts with a major kidnapping and then everyone is eating fried chicken and drinking lemonade. Fuck!

I didn't like Voyager if that didn't come across.

this is my idea for the second movie

You are all completely missing the point. The next movie/episode whatever obviously has to do with bringing back Vulcan from some time-space-plot-rift. It would never even occur to the Vulcans, but its exactly the kind of thing the human-led federation would jump at, particularly if it is a human starship captain driven by love of a dead Vulcan who never so much as shook his hand. The crew witnesses some 'event' whereby they can see Vulcan-beta through a time-space-plot-rift-window, and the love struck ensign jumps into the command and sends the ship through the rift. They find vulcan-beta in some kind of collapsing miniuniverse where other sapients never existed and then risk structure of the entire space-time continuum to hurl it back into their universe, all while the vulcans are like "uh, well, no, could you please not do that????". Then there's a huge, eyeburning amount of special effects, and the lovelost ensign is united with his vulcan-beta non-mate who gives him the old vulcan hard to get cold shoulder routine designed to drive any redblooded space adventurer mad with desire. the end.

That was kind of a rant, but I'm actually seeing a plot. The ship would pick up 'unusual energy reading' from Vulcan space, where they find a window to other universes where Vulcan is being destroyed over and over again, as the red matter falls through the multiverse.

Star Trek: Into Darkness was the second movie, Star Trek: Beyond will be the third. Well, technically, they are the 12th and 13th installments, respectively, but 2nd and 3rd in the rebooted franchise.

Maybe he's denying the existence of the 'Into Darkness'. I wouldn't blame him.

that was my suggestion for a sequel before it happened. they should have listened to me.....

They feel that way to me too, and I prefer Star Wars to Star Trek. It's just when I go see a Star Trek movie, I expect a Star Trek movie.
