SU suspends Theta Tau fraternity after video of ‘extremely racist’ behavior surfaces

The Syracuse University chapter of Theta Tau was suspended Wednesday morning after the university confirmed it was involved in the creation of online videos showing fraternity members engaging in behaviors that were “extremely racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist, and hostile to people with disabilities,” Chancellor Kent Syverud said in a campus-wide email.

In recordings obtained by The Daily Orange showing the videos, which were filmed in Theta Tau’s house, a person forces another person to his knees and asks him to repeat an “oath” including racial slurs.

“I solemnly swear to always have hatred in my heart for n*ggers, sp*cs and most importantly the f*ckin’ k*kes,” the person on his knees repeats.

Several videos filmed in the house were uploaded in the secret Facebook group. In one recording, a person, using anti-Semitic language, yells at two other people.

“You f*ckin’ k*kes, get in the f*ckin’ showers,” he says, and the two people run out of the room as others laugh.

In another recording, a person sits down in a rolling chair and a different person yells, “He’s drooling out of his mouth because he’s retarded in a wheelchair.”

At one point, one person tells others to “… Get together and (talk) about their significant others while drinking different wines and talking in gay girly accents.”

Were these guys really racist jerk wads or did they just have a bad sense of humor, drunk, trying to do a parody of racist homophobes? I'm inclined to think it's an act and they don't really have those hardcore opinions, but what do I know.

Were the people present minorities, gay, or handicapped? Maybe that makes it worse?

Did they break college rules for the fraternity or their national charter?

They are really racist jerk wads and the University was right to suspend the frat. Frats have gotton out of control.

Huh, they should take that youthful male bonding energy and rush of the thrill of transgressive behavior and do paintballing, skydiving, bungee jumping or whatever.

Or they could subject themselves to the Full Metal Jacket drill instructor.

They are getting a rush out the reactions and control or being controlled.

It is the very fact that what they are doing is wrong that is WHY they are doing it.

This is the social version of running with the bulls.

The technology of being able to record this while the human behaviours are the same is the difference now.

What is the most that some of you have done in situations like this? If you did it before the technology made the capturing of it not possible, then lighten your judgment.

Speaking of fraternities, why are frats that are specifically for one race only (i.e. black fraternities and sororities) ok?

These kids did not live through the Jim Crow era or the civil rights protests or the race riots. They don't really understand what all the fuss is about, especially if they aren't part of the minority that has been stigmatized historically.

If they did not understand, they would not have used such language to allegedly roast a Republican conservative member. Roasting a Republican conservative does not necessitate that type of behavior. And, one does not have to have lived through the Jim Crow era to understand that calling Jews "kikes" and telling them to go the showers is disgraceful behavior.

It seems strange they were rehearsing a sketch when there's no indication they planned a public performance of their racist little vaudeville act. Unless the performance was part of their initiation rituals, in which case their disgusting behavior isn't surprising.

At least they weren't engaging in alcohol poisoning.

FFS, in the "sketch" they referred to Jews as "kikes" and said they should go to the showers. And someone does not have to have lived through the Jim Crow era to know that is disgraceful behavior.
