Target is cutting down on its use of gender-based signage -- and not everyone is happy about it.

Last week, the mega-retailer announced on its blog, A Bullseye View, that it will no longer have signs with "boy" and "girl" qualifiers in certain departments, like toys and bedding.

"We know that shopping preferences and needs change and, as guests have pointed out, in some departments like Toys, Home or Entertainment, suggesting products by gender is unnecessary," Target noted on its blog. "Right now, our teams are working across the store to identify areas where we can phase out gender-based signage to help strike a better balance."
and some comments that were trolled by a fake store rep

Won't somebody think of the children? How will they be able to decide what toys they want? How can Target so shamelessly unleash this PC terrorism on law-abiding Americans?

The exact same toys without gender-label signs today, the Whore of Babylon astride her seven-headed beast tomorrow. Mark. My. Words.

So now I have to do all the extra work of sorting out the clothes and toys if I want to perpetuate gender stereotypes in my children? That's outrageous!

Maybe they should have just taken the signs down and not announced it as though it is a big deal, which then prompts others to react as though it is a big deal.

It reminds me of Sarah Silvermans quote: "Don't tell girls they can be anything, because it wouldn't have occurred to them they couldn't".

Probably a little less effort, especially if you have children of different genders. Now you can just go to one spot for shirts, and the stereotypical colour and graphical options will still be quite apparent. For instance a pink sweater with a princess graphic on it is clearly intended for boys. Er, no girls. Wait, no.... oh shit, I've forgotten. I'VE FORGOTTEN!!!!! IT'S ALREADY BEGUN!!! ANARCHY!!!!! SATAN IS UPON US!!!!!

I've been reading the comments and I am laughing so hard at the ignorance. It's hilarious.

The slow, arduous process of convincing ignorant people that their views are out-dated.

Come to think of it, I don't remember there ever being "boys" and "girls" signage in the toys department at Target. There's the Lego, and then more Lego, and more Lego, and I just realised I have never looked at anything other than the Lego.

This is my favourite:

I would hope Target would not consider it, but under law, could Target sue this hilarious guy who pretended to be a company representative for defamation?

Being serious for just a second here. The problem with the Silverman quote is it isn't true. By age one they've been inculcated with sex role and they can't even say it yet. Most people wouldn't have even thought about what they could or could not do. That's not what people normally do. People normally do what other people do and become be nice little anonymous human widgets.

Not necessarily. Girls are seeing women on TV doing everything men do. Girls grow up - and mostly before puberty sets in - with a competitive streak with boys. They look at boys and think "If they can do it, I can do it." And sometimes they think "I can do it better."

It's later that they're told how nice it would be for them to wear dresses, and admonished to keep their legs closed, and skirts down and to not climb or crawl or get their nice clothes dirty. It would have never have occurred to them otherwise to change their behavior.
