It seems no matter which party controls government there will be a lot of spending by the government.

That being the case which is more fiscally responsible: paying for your spending through taxes or financing your spending through debt?

Yeah, the voters do a better job of controlling Democrat excesses than Republican excesses because the effects are more obvious.

quite simply, look at the last 40 years of budgetary history in this country.

democrats: balanced budgets, surpluses, strong economy.
republicans: huge deficits, massive debt, economic collapse.

i don't see how this is even possibly in question.

Yeah, Republicans purport to be more fiscally responsible but the facts in no way bear this out, do they?

So in this thread the rule is deficit spending is bad for the economy?

In this thread it's being asked which is more fiscally responsible: paying for your spending as you go or debt-financing your spending?

What did your boy Keynes say?

In the long run we are all dead?

He said there's a time and place for both tax and spend & finance and spend.

In the long run we are all dead?

Balanced?? Just nowhere near the deficits of the Republicans.

It depends on the spending. I would think the pay as you go method tends to be a better choice overall, but if urgency is called for, debt isn't out the question. We just can't let the short-term pains of pay as you go overly entice the desire to ease the pain through debt, as the potential long term effect that debt can have may have a cost that outweighs the benefits.

Spending increases restraint under Clinton and Obama have been quite notable. You may remember the budget getting as close to balanced as it ever had under Clinton. Under Obama, discretionary spending has been near stagnant. Spending increases have mainly come from non-discretionary programs and the deficits were greatly influenced by tax revenues that had plummeted due to the Global Economic implosion you may have read about in the Fall of '08.

As I see it. Republicans tax the poor and middle class and cut the tax for millionaires with the idea of the trickle down effect. Democrats tax everyone! :p

They'll cut my taxes by $1000, they'll cut the 0.1% by a 1,000 times $1,000 (well, probably much more than that).

If you want we can raise your taxes by a factor of 2000 times $1000 first and then hand you a nice 1000 times $1000 tax cut.
