President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on Sunday after ISIS-inspired terror attacks against the city of St. Petersburg were thwarted by Russia's Federal Security Service using intelligence provided by the CIA.

"Vladimir Putin assured Donald Trump that the Russian intelligence services upon receipt of information relating to terrorist threats against the US and its citizens, will immediately transmit to its American colleagues in partner channels," the statement added.

This is wonderful! Sharing of intel to protect each other.

"Information obtained from the CIA was sufficient to search for and arrest of criminals," the Kremlin statement said. Trump was also asked to forward Putin's appreciation to CIA Director Mike Pompeo and the intelligence officials who obtained the information.

Wait... what now? "Information obtained from the CIA was sufficient to search for and arrest of criminals..."

Huh? This is Russia, not the United States. Russia will arrest who Russia wants to arrest, they don't need "information". Ask Pussy Riot or Magnitsky.

In a readout of the call released Sunday afternoon, the White House said Trump "appreciated the call" and "stressed the importance of intelligence cooperation to defeat terrorists wherever they may be."

"Both leaders agreed that this serves as an example of the positive things that can occur when our countries work together," the readout said.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed in a tweet Sunday that the leaders had spoken and said the White House was preparing to release a readout of the call.

4) The CIA hasn't come close to stopping "ISIS inspired" attacks in the US... but they have intel for attacks in St. Petersburg?!

I'm sorry, I don't have a knee-jerk xenophobic reaction to any story involving Russians, so I might just not get it, but what is so incredible about all of this? That US and Russian intelligence agencies share intel on potential terrorist threats? This already happened. Indeed, famously, the Russians tried to warn the US about the Boston Marathon bombers.

It's hard to say whether or not the CIA has "come close" to stopping ISIS-inspired attacks, although, some attacks have been stopped, and it wouldn't surprise me if some of those were due to CIA intelligence, although, most ISIS-inspired attacks are essentially home-grown in the US, so not really the purview of the CIA. But no doubt the CIA and the intelligence agencies have all sorts of intelligence on potential attacks.

The trouble is Putin being quoted as saying the intel was good enough to justify a search. Russia doesn't have the same restraints on investigative powers. Which really sounds fishy. That Putin directly called Trump, as well... it seems unlike Putin like.

Sounds like the typical sort of thing that gets said... no? I mean, the US always loves to talk about it's bullshit principles, but it's not like we are a bastion of due-process and civil liberties or anything like that. So again, I don't see what is so unbelievable about all of this. Least of all that Trump would try to use this to make himself look good.

What is "unlike Putin" about it? Anyway, with most of this diplomatic stuff, it's usually a case of "My people called your people and said it's fine if I say we had a good long talk", but all of that is actually dealt with between underlings.

Well, the Russian phrase for "justified a search" more properly translates as "gave us a reason to kick down this one door and shoot people as opposed to kicking down this other door and shooting people".

Also, I think it was nice of Putin to bring it up to Trump during the morning call when he was telling him what to do that day. Keeping your minions happy is a key aspect of being an effective evil overlord.

Yup. Just because we don't get along with them very well doesn't mean that we don't have mutual enemies.

Telling them about a terrorist in Russia would encourage them to tell us about a terrorist in America. So long as both sides care more about protecting their own country than hurting the other such cooperation makes sense.

Yea, Trump is really looking out for the Russians. You are probably happy that he just authorized the delivery of defensive weapons to Ukraine? This will more than likely put further disincentives for any further war between Ukraine and Russia. This will save a lot of lives.
