The most complete answer on why the American Civil War was fought.

Yeah, you can just look at the declarations of secession and it's obvious.

The often most cited reason other than slavery is states rights. The South argued against states rights because so many Northern states and local governments were refusing to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. They were arguing that the states had no right to refuse to enforce a federal law, classic anti-states rights.

Maybe someday we will be able to face up to the fact that slavery was a major reason why we fought the British for independence. It wasn't an accident that the British outlawed slavery in their home isles just two years before the start of the American revolution.

If you take the declarations of secession at their word, it was over slavery.

If you could have somehow given the southern plantation owners robots (free labor) to do what the slaves were doing, they would have voluntarily given up their slaves and there would not have been a civil war.

So yes, this was indeed an economic war. But it was an economic war that involved slavery.

That's like saying the Holocaust was a fear-stoking action that involved genocide.

lol no they wouldn't. They would have just stopped hiring poor white people as overseers and made the robots keep the slaves in line.

Also, they probably would have taught a few of their favorite slaves -- the "high yellow" variety favored in housework -- how to perform basic maintenance on the robots and keep them in good repair.

There would, but it would have looked very different.

For instance, the Battle of Appomattox would have looked something like this.
