Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government rescinded a visiting fellowship offered to Chelsea Manning, the former military intelligence analyst who spent seven years in prison for leaking classified government secrets, after the university faced forceful backlash from CIA Director Mike Pompeo among others.

...
...

The dean’s decision came only hours after Pompeo withdrew from a planned appearance at the Kennedy School and chastised the institution for calling attention to Manning. In a biting letter to the event’s organizers, Pompeo, who earned a law degree from Harvard, branded Manning an “American traitor” whose actions and ethos contradicted the intelligence agency’s most basic and sacred values.

“Harvard’s actions,” Pompeo added, “implicitly tell its students that you too can be a fellow at Harvard and a felon under United States law. … I believe it is shameful for Harvard to place its stamp of approval upon her treasonous actions.”

...
...

Pompeo’s blustery withdrawal from Thursday’s event joined a chorus of denunciation from national security experts, military veterans and others.

Earlier Thursday, in a stern letter of his own, Michael Morell, a former CIA leader who spent more than three decades at the agency, resigned from Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. He had been a fellow there since September 2013. The school’s invitation to Manning, Morell said, all but endorsed her decision to break the law.

This really shows how much control the right-wing has over elite American universities.

I can't check the Washington Post as my subscription ran out (free trial).

However I checked the left wing Guardian

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news...-cancels-harvard-speech-over-offer-to-traitor

It could be a right wing theme buta the article I read didn't mention anything about this.

Too bad there aren't many Christains on the right...
I mean, as I recall, we used to have this big thing about redemption and second chances.
Of course, on the other hand, Christains of the Right would probably have insisted on referring to Manning as 'him.'

I must have the wrong link.

My story is about two intelligence officials withdrawing/resigning posts at Harvard after Harvard offered a position to an intelligence leaker.

yeah weak sauce from Pompeo. I have a lot of respect for Bradley Manning.

A hero.

A real hero.

The US attack of Iraq was a huge act of terrorism.

To support it is to support terrorism on its largest scale.

Ya, everyone's a fucking snowflake these days. God forbid that someone with a different point of view than you gets an opportunity to express that point of view. That's the sort of thing that happened in Hitler's Germany.

Yeah, Hitler was a big believer in free association.

To be unlike Hitler you really need to force people to associate with people they disagree with.

Or, at least tolerate them and realize that you don't need to run away into your safe space for a decaf latte and visualization exercises if someone implies that it's not completely evil if they express themselves too.

It's somewhat disconcerting that high ranking intelligence officials in the US are in such dire need of hugs and positive affirmations.

The behavior one exhibits towards those whom they disagree with is the mark of civilization.

But nobody was being forced to associate with anybody.

These assholes that supported terror and bloodshed simply can't stand being on the same campus as somebody who exposed THEIR lies and crimes against humanity.

True. Criminals don't like the people who expose their crimes.

Now who do we side with?

The criminal?

Or the hero that exposes the criminal?

Did you mean to say they aren't in such a dire need to associate with Harvard?

You seem to have that backwards.

No, I'm saying that they had a hissy fit and ran away when someone with a position they disagreed with was treated as an actual human being who might have something to say. These guys are the definition of snowflakes.

They chose not to associate with organization they perceived as honoring someone dishonorable.

They exercised their freedom. And you're throwing a hissy fit about it.

Why do you hate freedom?

I don't see how mentioning that someone threw a hissy fit is, in itself, throwing a hissy fit. The Harvard guys wanted to play with a boy they didn't like, so they took their ball and went home.

That is, of course, a choice that they were perfectly free to make. This doesn't change the fact that they were being precious little snowflakes when they made it, though. Laughing at someone for being a snowflake isn't actually the same s trying to impede their freedom to act like a snowflake.
