SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA —
Australia’s Northern Territory is to rename racist names on a number of landmarks that have long demeaned indigenous groups. It follows similar measures in the state of Queensland.

The official Northern Territory place names register shows several entries with the pejorative term "blackgin."

This refers to a phrase used by white Australians to describe an Aboriginal woman, or "gin," who were used for sexual services.

The Queensland government is set to remove a number of racist place names from the map, including locations such as N----r Creek and N-----s Bounce.

Fairfax Media has today reported that up to 10 locations in the state either used that word or had a "similarly offensive term" in their name.

The Natural Resources and Mines Department removed references to these names on August 14, with the full list to be published in the Queensland Government Gazette in late September.

I heard on Bill Maher the other night that removing privilege often feels like oppression.

I still haven't gotten over them getting rid of the placename Castrillo Mota de Judíos in Spain.

Sad.

I do not see that as pejorative. It is very useful to know where to find the hookers. :)

I am sure you are being serious, but to most people with empathy it's a lingering sign of past oppression and offensive.
