Here we go again: http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/21/us/charlotte-police-shooting/index.html

Protests erupted in North Carolina after an officer fatally shot one man while serving a warrant for a different person at an apartment complex in Charlotte.

Police say the man they shot had a gun, his family members say he was carrying a book.

Several hundred people gathered outside the complex Tuesday night, chanting "no justice, no peace!" and carrying signs that said "Black Lives Matter."

While some threw bottles and rocks at officers working to control the protesters, others implored them to stop.

"That's when things really started to pick up. I would say not long before 11 p.m., police deployed tear gas ... as they tried to clear the streets," said Adam Rhew, associate editor for Charlotte magazine.

The biggest trouble with these shootings is if the victim was in the wrong, the family doesn't say so ('my baby only had thoughts of Jesus in his heart'). If the Police Officer(s) was in the wrong, the Police don't really say so ('the guy charged him, he thought he was a 600 lb gorilla on purple drank... and he had a sidewalk slab in his hands!'). There is a rigid wall between the two and it just makes every shooting suspect.

It depends on whether they find a book or a gun on the man.

The police said they recovered a gun. However, the family claims that he didn't have one and that he was "disabled" although apparently he is able to dance so I am not sure which disability he supposedly had - perhaps dyslexia or something.

The worst thing about all this is that CHarlotte erupted in riots (injuring several police officers) and looting (including several trucks on I-85). Nobody should be defending that shit!

Also, the dead guy's brother is a vicious racist, calling all white people devils even though his brother was shot by a black cop.

Absolutely. Great point. Polarization on issues like this only obscures true justice.

No racism there.

(And no time machine needed if you understand relativity and how it was used in the movies.)

The pic of the crowd on the roof of the car reminded me of this pic:

Seriously, what the fuck is your problem?! Your racism shit is just intolerable.

Huh, only police injuries are worth mentioning.

I'll defend it.

If agents of the state want to continue acting with impunity sometimes the only way to get their attention is to cause a disturbance. Want this shit to stop? Start holding police accountable. Make them have to go through the same justice system everybody else has to go through instead of the mess of conflicts of interest that is the current way we allow cops to engage in all sorts of bad behavior without suffering anything worse than a paid vacation.

The only things I've heard is that the Police say he had a gun, and others say he did not. I'm sure the dashcam footage and bodycam footage will show what happened.

Supposedly, NC has a new law that forbids the footage from these devices from being released for public viewing. I wonder if that's so the police can make up any shit they want. If the videos from the cameras aren't released, we may never know if the man was armed or the police planted a gun on him. It's gotten to the point, where I don't believe much of what the police are saying when such incidents occur. I'm a little old white woman and I am scared of the police. I can only imagine how black men in this country feel when they are stopped by the police.

It's ashame the riots became violent, but as one who lived through the so called race riots of the last 60s and early 70s, I do understand that when people feel frustrated, and angry, they sometimes do very irrational things. And, I imagine that most of those who protested didn't intend to loot or become violent. A number of bad guys spoil it for others. The same goes for the police. Most of them might be decent officers, but a small number of them have caused a lot of us to distrust police.

One more thing that's a bit off topic. Most southern states have open carry laws. Why is so easy for white people, mostly men, to open carry without any issues but when a black man openly carries, he's automatically assumed to be a criminal? Just sayin'.

I have not read news on this, just heard some comments on the resulting protests, but I have some questions if anyone knows:

  • What were the police looking for? It seems Keith Scott was not their intended target in the first place?
  • What were the police doing in a school zone? If this man was waiting for his child to get out of school, was he near a school?
  • Why were the police shooting in a school zone, if that's where they were? Why on earth would they not wait until he left the area?
  • What happened to the person they were actually after in the first place? Did his "escape" result in deaths because he was so dangerous that they felt they HAD to get him RIGHT THEN, or were they proven wrong about the need to escalate then and there by the fact that the actual "perp" who got away just _got_away_ and they can find him another day without risking school kids (and innocent people)

Also what do people think of this idea that the public has no right to body and dash cam images?

Huh, only police injuries are worth mentioning.
The rioters brought any injuries on themselves by, well rioting. Btw, there was a shooting where apparently one of the rioters shot another.

I'll defend it.
You'll defend violence, rioting, looting, blocking highways? And all that for a lie (not unlike Ferguson and Baltimore riots).

If agents of the state want to continue acting with impunity sometimes the only way to get their attention is to cause a disturbance.
What impunity? All police shootings are investigated and when it is found that the shooting is not justified the officer is prosecuted. What do you want? That police officers be prosecuted even when they did nothing wrong, based on how much outrage there is on Black Twitter or on the streets?

Want this shit to stop?
What shit? You mean families and #BLM activists spreading lies and misinformation every time a black person is killed, inciting violence?
No, Keith Lamont Scott was not just "reading a book". No, Tyre King was not just "playing with a BB gun" and he wasn't "shot in the back" either. No, Tavon Boyd was not "just reporting a break-in". Michael Smith was not lynched by KKK in Piedmont Park. This shit needs to stop indeed.

Start holding police accountable.
They are being held accountable. Sometimes more than warranted (see the frivolous Freddie Gray prosecutions). How about the black community start holding their own accountable instead of defending people just because of their skin color.

Make them have to go through the same justice system everybody else has to go through instead of the mess of conflicts of interest that is the current way we allow cops to engage in all sorts of bad behavior without suffering anything worse than a paid vacation.
They already are. And you have not said anything about why you think violence like we see in Charlotte, Baltimore, Ferguson, Milwaukee etc. is justified.

[*]What were the police looking for? It seems Keith Scott was not their intended target in the first place?
They were serving a warrant on somebody else. According to police, Scott went back to his car and emerged with a gun for some unknown reason. According to family and activists, he was reading a book and was shot for no reason whatsoever.
[*]What were the police doing in a school zone? If this man was waiting for his child to get out of school, was he near a school?
He was in an apartment complex, allegedly waiting for a school bus to drop off his son. A bit strange, I know.
[*]Why were the police shooting in a school zone, if that's where they were? Why on earth would they not wait until he left the area?
If somebody were to pull a gun in a school zone you think police should wait until he leaves the area? And anyway, he was not in a school zone.
[*]What happened to the person they were actually after in the first place? Did his "escape" result in deaths because he was so dangerous that they felt they HAD to get him RIGHT THEN, or were they proven wrong about the need to escalate then and there by the fact that the actual "perp" who got away just _got_away_ and they can find him another day without risking school kids (and innocent people)
I have not heard anything about the actual target of the warrant. Good question.

By the way, Keith Scott has a criminal record.
Keith Lamont Scott shooting: Charlotte police say he was holding a gun when shot
CBS News said:
Court records indicate that Scott had a criminal record including an assault conviction.
Mecklenburg County records matching Keith Lamont Scott’s name and birth date show Scott was charged in April 2004 with multiple counts, including felony assault with a deadly weapon. Records show that most of the charges were dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to a single charge of misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.
Records from nearby Gaston County show that Scott pleaded guilty to driving while impaired in 2015.

Also what do people think of this idea that the public has no right to body and dash cam images?
It varies by jurisdiction buy often the police will hold on to any evidence until the investigation is over.

Any word on the name of (or subject matter of) the book?

Funny really, how those who insist he was reading a book never mention what book he was supposedly reading.

Looks like the peaceful protesters found the evil White man responsible for the shooting: twitter.com/LibertarianQn/status/778845840496594944

There are people who want to take advantage of situations. Like Trump. Also it's funny that you care so much when black people are unmercifal but not when cops are unmercifal.

Oh wow. Now it's Trump's fault. I wonder if there's an an Internet law about how soon Trump will be associated with anything that goes wrong. Seems whatever the bad thing is, it's Trump, Trump, Trump. The only "Trump" factor I see out of this is that these "protests" will ensure he takes NC in November.

No one is "defending" their actions.
Ksen definitely is.
I'll defend it.

Come back when you and other conservatives learn the fucking difference between describing why a situation is happening and justifying it.
a. Not a conservative
b. I understand the difference.

Until then you're just arguing against a position no one is fucking holding and you're demonstrating how profoundly willfully ignorant you are.
Ksen is holding that position at the very least, since he admitted it.

They probably omitted that fact, along with a zillion facts that are irrelevant to the issue of justification. But it is telling that you felt the need to point it out.
You do not think the dead guy's criminal history is relevant here?

Whether the shooting is justified depends solely on what actually happened. So, his criminal history is not relevant just like his history of anything else. It is relevant to speculation or to blaming the victim. BTW, how come you haven't alerted everyone to the number of children he has fathered or his shoe size?

Nobody should be defending that shit!

I'll defend it.

If agents of the state want to continue acting with impunity sometimes the only way to get their attention is to cause a disturbance.

You defend someone burning down my business - bankrupting my family, and starving my children - because they are mad at the government?

You defend this? Really?

Want this shit to stop? Start holding police accountable.

You defend people holding entire communities - communities they claim to care about - as hostages to advance their own political agenda?

You defend this? Really?
