Welcome to the pregame show for the 2016 Republican National Convention! It's looking like it will be quite the contested battle lining up. Donald Trump is looking less and less likely to secure enough post-apocalyptic mutants (a.k.a. delegates) to secure the nomination. Neither will any other candidate. This will leave the party in disarray. How will this play out? Who will they nominate? Ryan? Romney? Walker?

Leave your predictions below.

Firearms will probably not be allowed inside the convention hall but I'll bet there will be a lot of them outside.

Place your bets! The betting market says there will be a bloodbath (a.k.a. contested convention)

Wisconsin’s primary results changed bettors’ outlook on the convention by giving Cruz a big chunk of delegates that Trump badly needed in order to get to the 1,237 needed to win the nomination outright. According to FiveThirtyEight, Trump was already 6 percent behind the number of delegates he would need to be on track to win the nomination. The deficit in Wisconsin pushed him even farther behind.

The likelihood of a contested convention of two or more ballots is directly related: If Trump fails to get to 1,237 delegates, the nomination remains up for grabs. He would have to convince enough delegates to vote for him in the first round of voting to make up the deficit — and there aren’t very many delegates not tied to a candidate in that first round. If no candidate gets the 1,237 majority in that vote, many of the delegates become free to vote for anyone. No one knows what would happen at that point.

Meanwhile Roadwarrior and odds maker Nate Silver says that Cruz will be the victor over Ryan in the Cleveland Thunderdome. http://fivethirtyeight.com/features...an-would-probably-win-a-contested-convention/

But Republicans won’t be starting from scratch, and the “establishment” won’t pick the party’s nominee. The 2,472 delegates in Cleveland will. And most of them will be chosen at state or local party conventions a long way from Washington. Few will be household names, having quietly attended party gatherings in Fargo, North Dakota, or Cheyenne, Wyoming, for years with little remuneration or recognition. Although the proverbial Acela-riding insiders might dream of Ryan or Kasich, there are indications that the rank-and-file delegates are into Ted Cruz — and they’re the ones who will have votes in Cleveland.

To recap a bit, the Republican presidential voting process is separate from the delegate selection process in most states. In South Carolina, for instance, most delegates are selected through a series of county, congressional district and state conventions. Although those delegates are bound to Trump (who won the state’s primary on Feb. 20) on the first ballot, they could peel off and vote for another candidate after that

If only they would required each attendee to show proof of demonstrating their 2nd Amendment obligation prior to admittance to the show...

I want conceal and carry. That with the balloon drop would be a jaw-dropping combination (or clusterfuck.) Republitards, embrace it. This is your destiny. This is what your glorious 160 history is leading to. Valkyrie 2016!!! Also featuring topless Republitard fembots and shirtless Donald Trump in a spiked helmet. And lotsa lotsa flags.

Trump isn’t so lucky. Ted Cruz is almost certainly going to fight hard all the way to the last primaries on June 7 and beyond. (John Kasich might, too.) Unlike Santorum, who ran out of money after losing Wisconsin in 2012, Cruz is flush with cash. That doesn’t necessarily mean Trump won’t end up with a higher share of support overall than he has won in primaries so far. He should add to his total in the New York primary later this month, for example. But after New York, the calendar becomes considerably tougher for him.

Unless something radically changes, Trump will finish the primary season with the lowest percentage of the primary vote and the lowest share of delegates of any Republican presidential primary vote leader since caucuses and primaries became the main method for selecting nominees.

Also, Cruz actually has a ground game and he's picking up delegates all over the place that Trump is missing by Cruz's actually reading the delegate nomination rules. Even if many of those delegates are required to vote for Trump on the first round, the actual people are more often ones who Cruz wants there, so they aren't going to be supporting Trump or the establishment candidates in the second and later rounds. If they change the rules so that the delegates are less bound than they currently are (which could very well be a matter voted on by the delegates and those delegates don't need to care who their State voted for when it comes to these procedural matters), then Trump has even less support in the first round.

Basically, Trump's realization a few months back that he might actually win and his run could be more than a publicity stunt kind of caught him off guard and he found himself lacking the infrastructure to take advantage of his position.

What's with the logo for the convention? An elephant rocking out while walking along the neck of a left handed Stratocaster, as if American conservatives are trying to channel Jimi Hendrix for their rockin' bash?

It should be an elephant charging down the barrel of a pistol with a bunch of rednecks sitting on top who have mounted a .50 cal machine-gun that's pointing at a group of obviously unarmed people.

Ahhhhhh, yes! Rabid elephants on the loose! Trump vs Cruz. Threats to leave the party and take voters with him, Trump trumpets like a rogue elephant. In the background, you can hear the heart rending sobs of the mainstream movement Republicans. The Stop Trump republicans are getting hysterical, and the Senate is slowly sliding out of GOP hands.

A more appropriate symbol might be an elephant swimming if a piranha invested river.

Watching the convention in Cleveland on TV will be very entertaining. Listening to the shrieks of pain from Lush Rimjob, Sean Insanity, Mike the Savage Weiner, and Mark Leslime will be music to my ears.

The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland.

Finally, it's once again time to call on the Brooks Bros. rioters to do their duty.

If Ryan is not running, someone should tell his staff to stop making campaign videos.

So is the site of the Collinwood school fire where 172 kids died. Maybe that'd be a better logo for them.

That's funny. To have "a contest of ideas" both sides need to actually have ideas. That is, unless an idea counts as just opposing anything the other side says.
