Toddler falls into gorilla cage at Cincinnati Zoo

It really couldn't have gone down any other way (for the response team). You can't just instantly knock out a gorilla and you can't leave a four year old in with a silverback.

Or any other 400lb wild animal for that matter.

If this had been a 400lb tiger, there would be considerably less uproar IMO.

With good reason.

I feel terrible for the gorilla. But I also see no other alternative. A powerful tranquilizer would might have made the gorilla violent and unpredictable.

FIFY

As it was, they killed the gorilla anyway because they felt he was unpredictable, but not yet violent. It's possible that a more compassionate approach might have worked also. You can't just discard those options.

As I understand it, the zoo was watching the gorilla for 10 minutes before they decided that the ape was getting more agitated and made the call to shoot. If they had used the sedative immediately the ape may have never gotten to an agitated state. Or other options like ringing the dinner bell and sending in the animal handlers to snatch up the boy might have been an option too.

As it was, the zoo didn't want to take any chances. Which is fine.

If I had "fixed" it, I would have said, "may," not, "might."

The word, "might" expresses possibility, but it expresses a bare possibility (or at least a bare possibility); The word, "may" also expresses a possibility, but it's stronger and expresses plausibility whereas "might" doesn't.

There's more at stake than changing the true value. When he said, "would," the truth value of the proposition isn't necessarily false, but he is committed to expressing justification that would have been retained with "may,"--that wouldn't have with, "may."

So, that's two reasons why "may" would have been a better fit.

Someone should point out to Mom that god protected her child only after he allowed him to fall into the pit, causing the death of another of god's creatures. WTF, god?

I am a huge animal activist, but in this I have to agree.

Watching the video clips, I actually think the silverback was trying to protect the little boy. He had plenty of time to kill the boy if that had been his intent. Unfortunately, a 4-year-old human child simply can not survive the normal handling that a juvenile gorilla does, so even those protective actions could be life-threatening to the boy. And with the human crowd getting into more and more of a frenzy, you could see the gorilla getting agitated. I don't think the zoo personnel had any good choices there.

I am another one, though, who questions how the boy was able to get past TWO barriers and a buffer-zone without anyone seeing him.

 he has a point

^^^^ THAT! I wanted to slap the mother silly reading her stupid-ass comments :(

The video doesn't show the whole range of the gorilla's behaviour--apparently the noise and fuss made it increasingly agitated.
Yeah, a whole bunch of fail. The parent who clearly was either watching too many kids or not attentive, the crowd who thought ohhing and ahhing a gorilla was a good idea. The mother shouting, "I'm here" repeatedly... 'yeah Mom... thanks.'

The zoo had no choice. The gorilla was being aggressive and didn't need to try to harm the child to harm the child. This is why we shouldn't be able to get into the exhibit. The zoo seems to have made it possible to get in. Toledo and Columbus, I believe it is impossible to sneak in where the zoo patrons walk about.

What do you mean? Because God got involved, they didn't need to kill the gorilla.

And filmed in portrait. Don't people watch videos on tvs anymore?

It reminds me of a saying by, of all people, Jefferson Davis, who said one of the poorest uses of a soldier was to shoot him.

Goodall reminds us, without neglecting the circumstances, that shooting zoo exhibits is poor use of them.
