After a social media firestorm, the University of Washington cheerleading squad took down a poster with "do's and don'ts" of how people should look for their upcoming tryouts.

Twitter and Facebook users called out the squad, saying the poster encourages body shaming and prioritizes appearance over ability with "body do's" like being "physically fit" with an "athletic physique." They also ask that potential cheerleaders wear just a sports bra and mid-rise black shorts, while telling them not to wear any tops "that cover the midriff" or high-waisted shorts.

In a statement, the University of Washington athletic department said they instructed the squad to take down the poster after realizing that it could be seen as offensive.

In other words, best to keep people ignorant and hide the truth than to inform them on what will improve their odds of joining the cheer squad.

Wow... umm... I was expecting something a bit more judgemental. Don't see anything wrong there. It's more of a "how to dress for work" poster.

I suppose some people can find anything offensive.

This must have sent a few gibbering wrecks to the "safe space". No trigger warning ? No wonder they were outraged.

When will somebody just tell these idiots to fuck off. Or better yet, just ignore social media, it's a cesspit of unhinged lunatics.

Oh crap, you just reminded me it's almost that time of year that I have to meet with the freshman cheer squad selections that did not get admitted.

"Coach Bob says I need to talk to you to get into college." :banghead:

I was going to say that some of the dos and don't seemed to focus on vapid and cosmetic aspects of cheerleading (makeup and hair styles and colors) that could easily be changed, but then I realized cheerleading is vapid and cosmetic.

As an aside, apparently there are no men on the cheerleading squad. Where are those dogged men's rights advocates when you need them?

Good catch.

Not really http://uwspirit.com/meet-the-team/

Geez. About eight or ten guys on the team.

Guess the poster is just there to instruct dumb blondes girls wanting to try out.

U W alum: disgusting, just disgusting.

The actual stance of Varsity sports ?department? at the school:
"We might say wear a clean outfit and make sure your hair is done," but beyond that, Varsity doesn’t have guidelines for how participants should look, the representative said, adding:

"Our focus is on athleticism. We like to keep the focus on athleticism and cheerleading skills."

Some other people beyond that seem to be getting confused between cheerleader requirements and cheerleader objectification requirements.
