And yes, I say he will fail. And will fail massively. At some point it will be obvious to all. But at that point, what will the Republicans and other neocons say? Will they deny the economic data or violence in front of them? Will they just claim they never were really Trump supporters? Claim that Trump really was never one of them all along. Find a way to blame Democrats? (the 2008 financial crisis was all Dems fault even though the Repubs controlled Congress, the White House and the Courts.
So what do you think will be their bullshit excuses for a Trump presidency?

This question is actually absurdly painfully easy to answer, to the point where I feel embarrassment on your behalf that you even need to ask it. Republican Party leadership never wanted Trump and never supported Trump, and only grudgingly accepted him when he agreed to put in his cabinet Republicans more acceptable to the party. They even campaigned against him in the primary, much the way the Democratic Party campaigned against Bernie. Unlike the Democrats, the Republicans weren't able to squash the person standing in the way of the candidate they wanted.
So if there comes a problem that can be shown to be the result of a Trump decision, the leadership can say "see, we told you he wasn't one of us."
That's been apparent since long before the convention.
I know that most people who follow US politics have distressingly short memories, but this is a pretty sad and extreme example of that problem.
Now on the other hand, since during the Trump administration, and this will be true no matter what Trump does, there will be severe economic turmoil 25 years in the making, turmoil that briefly broke out in 2001 and 2008 but was pushed back down to build up even more pressure each time, the question is whether Trump will get the blame for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or if he will successfully point out that the problem started before he got into office.
