Google's doodle today shows a group of people with a variety of religions. Of course the female Muslim is wearing the hijab.

Time's "Muslims in America" photo bit shows every single female with the hijbab. _Every_ _Single_ _One_

And of course, this image has become the symbol of people who want to stand up against intolerance against Muslims:

And yet there are millions of Muslims who do not think wearing the hijab is necessary nor mandatory and therefore do not wear it and yet are just as Muslim as all the others.

Why is there this obsession with the hijab and this tendency of the media and those on the left to normalize the idea that a proper female Muslim wears the hijab?

It is absolutely fucking nuts that the left has adopted the hijab as symbol of tolerance for Muslims. I don't think that you could design something more tailor-made to raise the ire of the left. The hijab is meant to prevent Muslim men from sinning when they see a woman dressed "immodestly." It is all *about* putting the onus on women for men's behavior.

Fucking nuts.

And no matter how much I support a Muslimina's right to wear whatever she wants, and even support reasonable accommodations being made towards that end, it is undeniably a symbol of an oppressively patriarchal society. Furthermore, it is a symbol of political Islam. It's use was already waning in the early part of the 20th century, and it was reborn as a political statement in support of Islamist/nationalist movements in the Islamic world.

Here is a good op ed about the issue:

Though these steps toward greater acceptance of the hijab in the West demonstrate respect for diversity, it is important not to narrow down Muslim women’s identify to one outward symbol. The hijab should not be normalized as the only “Muslim” choice. The views, identities, and norms of those who choose not to wear the hijab are as legitimate and various as the reasons for wearing it. In some countries, there are as many Muslim women who do not wear the hijab as Muslim women who do, and the discussion within Muslim culture itself is a controversial one, as hijab is not a fundamental aspect of Muslim tradition.

In that vain, it would be nice for the media to show Muslim women without the hijab much more often.

I think it is apparent that the visual media views the hijab as the most visually effective method of portraying a Muslim to its audience.

From what I can tell, "the left" does not view the hijab as proper or improper attire but a choice that should be left up to the individual.

What is this obsession with conservatives in a free society in telling people what they should not wear?

Well, in the Google case, you need to berate the liberal media source of 15 year old Sarah Harrison, the HS contest winner...

What's old is new again J8.

100 years ago, the hardline feminists of the day considered the corset a symbol of male objectification of women. Times and tastes change. What was a symbol of male oppression yesterday, becomes of fashion statement and symbol of self expression tomorrow. It's just kind of how things are.

She is reflecting the normalization that a proper Muslim woman wears the hijab in that case. It further reinforces the point.

Islam as practiced is a like the Amish in a way. Nothing concrete about the clothing in the Koran or Hadiths, or am I wrong?

This is also seen in how female Muslim athletes who cover up while competing are hailed as heroines for merely showing up while female Muslim athletes who don't cover up are ignored. There is a good intention there to voice tolerance, but with it comes at least an unwitting endorsement of oppression by religion.

Yeah, the hijab is the most obvious indication that someone is a Muslim. It doesn't matter that it doesn't apply to all Muslims (it certainly wouldn't, men don't wear them!), but that no other symbol is anywhere near as common.

Likewise the Christian cross and the Jewish Star of David.

Maybe this is just me, but a crescent moon and star would have given me the hint.

I agree with you.

Conservative and more radical Muslim groups are the ones pushing it and the Left swallows it. A person is free to wear what they want but having worked for several years in the Middle East (UAE and Qatar) not everyone wears this. When locals go on holiday they don't wear it. This is what they tell me. I met colleagues who took their wives to the UK when on business. There was no Hijab.

Most conservatives and actual socialists and liberals don't care. However the Hijab is not worn by all Muslims of course. Linda Sasour and her Feminazi left wing and Marxist partners promote this. Muslim reformers for instance generally don't wear this.

The Head scarf pre dates Islam and there is no mention of this in the Koran.

Because if she wasn't wearing a hijab, she'd look

1) Mexican
2) Spanish
3) Turkish
4) Semitic
5) Hawaiian

She'd be a generic brown skinned woman. There are no facial features that indicate what religion someone is.

... isn't that what the religious icons are for? E.g. the star and crescent?

In addition to equating Muslim women with hijab, there is also equation of Muslim = brown. But Muslim is not a race or skin color, but a religion. Muslims come in every shade, even ginger.

And who says Muslims have to be brown skinned? Look at the Boston Marathon bomber.

Not to mention that the attire just plain doesn't work for beach volleyball.
