Would a 10-20 person fully armed/armored assassination team actually be able to take out Trump/Clinton?

I would imagine that this is what the Secret Service really plans for and with Trump it is not out of the realm of possibility. There is no way any of the team would get away without dying or going to prison, so it would take a heavy commitment like ISIS or some crazy lefties.

Just getting that many people together and not having one being a snitch or agent would be the hard part.

It would make a great movie.

I think that the Secret Service is better and more trained at defending against this than any group would be attacking it. The main issue would be getting to the candidate. They have multiple escape routes planned out and the attackers would be far more likely to find themselves running around the hallways fighting the backup agents while the main team already has the candidate a few blocks away on the off chance that they beat the odds and managed to get in the door before dying horribly.

It might make for a good movie, but it would suck as an assassination plot.

Lee Harvey Oswald could do it by himself

Why would ISIS go after Trump? He's a dream come true for recruiting and for the fire drill that the government would find itself in.

As for your question, the larger the group, the bigger the chance of being detected during the planning stage and/or recruiting an undercover agent.

An assassin's chance of success depend entirely upon his desire to escape after he takes his shot.

A suicide squad could probably kill any world leader, but a group requires planning, and that is a serious security risk for any conspiracy.

Yup. Armored truck bomb with enough explosives will most likely work.

Beyond that, though, I would say it depends on the skill and weapons of the squad.

Find someplace where you know he's giving a speech outdoors. The day before the speech your team takes over a bunch of apartments/condos overlooking the area, perhaps half a mile away. (You want multiple places but clustered.) They have heavy-caliber sniper rifles. They set up but behind lightweight drapes and a closed window. On a timer small explosives cut away the drapes and shatter the window, the snipers fire. You want the shots spread over something like a second so if there's any armored glass in the way the first rounds shatter it and the latter go through.

Yes, the guards very well might see the windows blow and know there's trouble but they have to observe it, recognize the threat, radio that recognition (it can be a single word but that still takes time) to the people near the target who then have to react to get him out of the line of fire. If the snipers are already aimed this will take more time than they have.

Second option--long before the speech they install some "machinery" on the roof of suitable buildings. So long as it looks like typical roof-mount stuff (say, air conditioners) only someone who knows what should be there (and how often is such a person going to be there??) is likely to notice it. They have a firing port built in. This takes more leadtime but won't tip off the guards.

Third option--similar to #2 but instead of sniper rifles they have something like the M-47 Dragon anti-tank missiles. (Not the modern self-guiding stuff.) The shooters can be behind armor plate that will make it unlikely a defender can hit them while the missile is in flight. This time you want a bit more spread so the missiles don't fratricide. Half the team aims for his feet so if the agents manage to dogpile him the missiles don't simply fly on past.

Fourth option, lots of leadtime here. Pick a city he's sure to fly into. Rent space adjoining every road out of the airport. (Looking over the local airport this would involve three locations to basically guarantee success. All three have nearby business locations.) Dig down and under the road. Place large explosive charges under the road, seal up the tunnels long before the target is expected. When the target drives over one of your hidden bombs, push the button.

Sure they would use bomb-sniffing dogs but the dogs aren't going to detect the charge buried a few feet down below an impermeable surface and you allow plenty of time for any scent that got transferred in your building to dissipate. (You also make it as hard as possible to smell in the first place--the charge is freshly sealed elsewhere, then transported to it's final location as quickly as possible. Of course it's going to have to be transported in multiple pieces but that's just logistics.) I doubt 10-20 people can do this but most of them aren't combatants and aren't anywhere near the scene of the crime when the boom happens.

You are one scary dude, Loren. Did you come with these off of the top of your head or have you been thinking about it for a long time?

I honestly don't know which would be the scarier.

He completely neglected the simplest way to do it, which is to recruit a Secret Service agent on the body guard detail.

In the history of the world, that is actually the most common way to assassinate a leader.

The FBI is now watching Loren.

Seriously though, it's not that hard to imagine a scenario that would be successful. What I am surprised by is that it hasn't happened. When I read the Yahoo! boards for fun, the anger of conservatives is palpable. Here in California, the legislature just passed a more restrictive bill and the rubes are in a self-righteous fury, utterly convinced the country is right around the corner from forced re-education camps. How hard would it be for a group of these shitheads to get together and plan something far less complicated than what Loren has described?

All they'd have to do is not use the internet to communicate with each other. Make a few phone calls, agree to meet up somewhere, draw up a plan for a certain time and place, practice it, be ruthless in their resolve, and that's really all it would take--especially if they were willing to go to jail and/or be killed for their efforts.

On the other hand, how angry can they actually be? If they had any bite, in contrast with their loud idiotic bark, there should have been many overt attempts on Obama's life by now, but there's only been one where any kind of group specifically planned anything.

Assassination plot in Denver
Main article: Barack Obama assassination plot in Denver
Three men allegedly discussed shooting Barack Obama, then the 2008 Democratic Party presidential nominee, during his acceptance speech on the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. Cousins Tharin Gartrell and Shawn Adolf, and their friend Nathan Johnson, allegedly came to Denver specifically to kill Obama, and discussed in their hotel room how they could assassinate him.[9][17][18][19] On August 24, 2008, Gartrell was arrested when police found his truck filled with weapons and narcotics.[20][21][22] Johnson and Adolf were arrested shortly thereafter and, during a televised interview, Johnson later indicated Adolf was the one who planned the alleged threat.[18][23] Authorities later downplayed the threats and indicated the trio had little chance of successfully killing Obama.[4][18] The three men were charged with drug and weapons charges and sentenced, but did not face federal charges of threatening a presidential candidate.

So even this^ bit of fuckery was largely an act of armed stupidity.

And most of the people in the Wiki article were obvious nutjobs.

What has to be concluded is this:

The Internet.

For an assassination, the likelihood that it could be one armed person in a crowd as the candidate greets them and shakes hands with a few. Though extremely difficult there is still a possibility of a sniper or two but not using radio or phone communication (e.g. pre planned).

Trump may just fake his own death if he wins. I don't believe he ever wanted to be president. He just wants to get publicity for himself and to "win". As soon as he wins... he'll lose all interest in the job.

Those were all off the top of my head, although a couple are derivatives of scenarios I've run into in fiction. What's scary about it?

Those who kill Presidents are almost always lone crazies. As such, they aren't likely to have the skill or resources to do an elaborate scenario.

The organizations that could pull it off don't because of the wrath that would descend upon them if they did. About the only organizations around that might try it are Al Qaeda as it was ~15 years ago and ISIS--and neither are exactly known for the skill of their people.

The problem with snipers is that the secret service is looking over the places where they could shoot from. You can't just pick up a rifle and expect to pull it off. That's why I came up with those ways of hiding the sniper.

Incidentally, one more variation on this that basically guarantees the attacker gets away:

Take a sniper rifle, build a servo to aim it and attach a camera to the optics to see where it's aimed. Place it in dead space in a building. (Thinking of our house--there are engineered trusses between the first and second floor. Assuming a nearly horizontal aim was possible it certainly could be put there) and replace a bit of the outer wall with a screen printed to look like what you replaced. (Ideal would probably be a brick building as it's already full of discontinuities so there's much less issue of making it match up smoothly.) From the outside it will look normal but you can still aim through it so long as the mesh of the screen is small compared to the size of your optics. (I'm thinking of the solar screens on our house. So long as you're not too close to them they're basically invisible when looking from dark to light--and basically solid when looking from light to dark.) Do something to remove the screen just before you fire. Again, if there's any issue of bulletproof glass you'll need multiple rifles.

Correct as you said, where you are showing a new idea based on an old one (Camouflage). However if the shooter doesn't mind being caught or shot afterwards then as long as he can fire, that's all he needs. We also have enough technology to set up a gun in this manner that is operated from a distance so the shooter can even be thousands of miles away.

What about one dude with energy weapons?
Pulse rifles and particle projection canons
All it would take is one rail gun,one shot

Hack into the controls for the ISS or any really large satellite, and crash it into the Whitehouse.

Bonus points for instead launching a rocket to bump an asteroid of suitable size into a collision course with Washington DC; or for constructing your own purpose built satellite to do the job. It need not be complex - just as heavy as you can afford to launch. Mass of the projectile to be scaled based on the acceptable level of collateral damage. This may require a fairly large number of conspirators, and a vast amount of cash; although both requirements could be reduced by contracting a commercial launching outfit, and disguising the payload as something innocuous - a TV satellite, for example.

Isn't Kim Jong-un working on this very task?
