A gunman killed three people and wounded two others Thursday at a drugstore distribution center in Harford County, Maryland, officials said Thursday.

The shooting occurred at a Rite Aid support facility, and "what I understand is the location is secure," said Rite Aid spokeswoman Susan Henderson. Roughly 1,000 employees work there, she said.

As far as mass shootings go, this one is highly unusual in that the rampage shooter was a woman.

The suspect used a 9 mm Glock pistol and brought several magazines for the gun, Gahler said at a news conference. The gun was hers and was purchased legally, he said.

Another good guy/gal with a gun... until they murder a bunch of people.

There is also a biological component, known as the “weapons effect.” Testosterone spikes in the presence of weapons, and increased testosterone leads to increased acts of aggression. As long as an object can be perceived as a weapon, this sort of mental priming can take place, Klarevas said.

In fact, all gun massacre perpetrators have been of working age (between 16 and 64), and overwhelmingly male. Out of 128 cases he studied, 122 perpetrators were men and only six were women, with just one of those women acting alone, Klarevas said.

In his book, he writes that he believes we have so few women rampage shooters because women typically have lower levels of testosterone, and even the "weapons effect" he talks about wouldn't raise the testosterone levels high enough. But if this shooter was also taking injections, maybe...

The author made it clear, btw, that the typical man is not a rampage shooter partly because *normal* levels of testosterone don't cause people to kill - he believes it is the "weapons effect" that pushes normal testosterone into violence-producing levels; and because the other elements (fragile super-ego and access to something to use as a weapon) need to also be present.
