YouTube deletes Alex Jones' channel

Geez, I'm certainly no fan of Alex Jones, but why stop with him? What about religious websites, creationist websites, psychics, BigFoot websites, anit-vaxxers, holocaust deniers, chemtrails, alternative medicine crap, etc, etc. Just kinda wondering how we're going to pick and choose which websites to delete that propagate harmful bullshit.

I'd go with common sense. But it seems you like to live in a world where pizza shops are paedophile sex clinics and school shootings with Blackhawkdown weaponry is a hoax. Also, it appears as though you approve of inciting vulnerable people into acting into such violence then stepping back and say, "that's not what I meant!"

Good luck with that.

It does seem pretty easy to draw the line at asshole that gets people to harass families of children that were massacred. And NY Jet fan websites.

Its as if conservatives are too fucking stupid to understand magnitudes and harm.

Smoke detector?! Why not just hire the fire department to live at your house?! DUH!HHHHH!!!

Alex Jones didn't get kicked off of any social media outlets. He's a crisis actor hired to claim that he was kicked off of social media.

Youtube just needs a separate category called Idiottube where along with proper disclaimers you get to charge people big bucks for use of the platform.

Was there a meeting or backchannel communication for all of these companies to do this on the same day? (Think GameJournoPros and "Gamers are dead")

Or just Youtube took the lead and these other companies thought this fucker was a crazy liability and now they could cut him loose like they wanted to for a long while.

YouTube didn't take the lead. Spotify, Apple and even Facebook acted before YouTube.

If I own a newspaper freedom of speech does not mean anyone gets a voice in it. Anyone however is free to develop their own outlets. Before the net political oddballs and conspirxcy theorists wrote pamphlets, and had newsletters.

Any kind of service can have limitations. A gay site may limit to gays only, as with a hetero only site if one does exist. A feminist site may reject any opposition coomentray.

We have a COTUS right to free speech, but there is no protection for consequences. That applies witrhin a family, between friends, at work..and the net. We have the freedom to reject.

Note that people have been banned from the forum for chronic conent that is nonsense.

If I ran a publishing platform, I'd blacklist all of those. These services ought to take some responsibility for the content that they allow to be published on their platform, just as book publishers must do.

On the other hand, if I ran a web indexing/search service, I wouldn't blacklist anything I wasn't legally required to. However, any algorithm that considers Alex Jones relevant to news, current affairs, or any other search for factual information, is a broken algorithm.

Alex Jones agreed to the terms of service when he joined those platforms, and he violated those terms.

But sure. Tell us about how he's being "persecuted" because white privilege didn't allow him to violate those terms and keep going as if nothing happened.

The talking point I heard this evening from my local talk radio outlet is that everyone knew that Alex Jones was satire. Oh, sure, there were a scattered few listeners who took him seriously, but the overwhelming majority of his fans knew he was nothing more than an entertainer! They shared his wacky conspiracy theories just for fun!

Seriously.

So DrewJ was one of the outliers then. Seriously, someone is actually arguing he was satire? These people realize satire is supposed to have a point, not be the conspiracy theory version of Family Guy.

Too bad YouTube couldn't just delete Alex Jones.
YouTube can't but parent company Alphabet probably has the resources required too...

...nevermind. I don't want to get too caught up in a fantastical irony of Alex Jones' death being part of an actual conspiracy.

iTunes and Spotify join the shutdown

A few other commercial outlets also have dumped this scumbag off their platforms. Even FaceButt, found (amazingly just) 4 pages of Infowars content that violated their standards and yanked them. I find it kind of pathetic that it actually took this long for any commercial site that won't allow pornography, to finally shut his sicko shit off.

Following Right Wing Watch’s reporting on Spotify’s hosting of Infowars content in its podcast stream, Apple today removed all Infowars content from iTunes in what The Washington Post called “one of the most aggressive moves by technology companies and streaming services against the conspiracy theorist and owner of the right-wing media platform Infowars.”

Hours later, Spotify today told the Post: “Due to repeated violations of Spotify’s prohibited content policies The Alex Jones Show has lost access to the Spotify platform.”

Facebook is a moral-less corporation. Hardly surprising that it took them so long.
