They are assailing the legitimacy of every election whose result they do not like already. THAT's the plan: to undermine confidence in the voting process and in democracy itself.

You're mistaken: Democrats and others have openly and vehemently criticized Trump and other Republicans, but mostly Trump for his actions and inactions. They did not challenge the results of the 2016 election, Hillary conceded quickly in order to preserve the union. Criticizing political leaders openly is very American and very much permitted under our constitution. Trying to stop the certification of a national election through an armed insurrection? Not so much.
