The head of a US pharmaceutical company has defended his company's decision to raise the price of a 62-year-old medication used by Aids patients by over 5,000%.

Turing Pharmaceuticals acquired the rights to Daraprim in August.

CEO Martin Shkreli has said that the company will use the money it makes from sales to research new treatments.

The drug treats toxoplasmosis, a parasitic affliction that affects people with compromised immune systems.

After Turing's acquisition, a dose of Daraprim in the US increased from $13.50 (£8.70) to $750.

. . .

The pill costs about $1 to produce . . .

"These days, modern pharmaceuticals, cancer drugs can cost $100,000 or more, whereas these drugs can cost half a million dollars. Daraprim is still underpriced relative to its peers," [Turing CEO Martin Shkreli] told Bloomberg TV

What a piece of shit that he can say all this with a straight face.

I saw a post on facebook about this so I figured it was full of crap, being on Facebook and all.

People like this need to put themselves into a safe and dropped to the bottom of the ocean. The drug company had a 750% sale to production cost on it to begin with, and research hasn't exactly been needed for several decades for the drug 60+ year old drug. This is shit that idiot CEO's in television sitcoms on Television do, not real life.

Who is it that made the rule where we're not allowed to set people on fire?

That's a stupid rule.

He is a piece of shit, but I would like to know mechanics of that scam. 50 year old drug must have patents expired, right?

One would think so. If there's some process available which has let them keep the patent rights for over 60 years, that's a process which needs to be gutted and rewritten.

from wikipedia:
In August 2015, as executive chairman of Turing Pharmaceuticals, Shkreli raised the price of Daraprim from $13.50 per pill to $750 per pill — a 5,455% increase[4] — shortly after purchasing the rights to the drug for $55 million from Impax Laboratories. Turing has exclusive rights to market Daraprim, which has been on the market since 1953.[12] While the patent has long expired, no company is currently manufacturing generic pyrimethamine
If I understand this correctly he basically bought a trademark. So anyone can make that drug and call it "Fuckyoushkreli"

By the way, If it were in Russia he would have been in prison already:)
some made up reasons but in prison

Meh, greedy and evil CEO is so dog-bites-man.

The man-bites-dog story here is the insufficiently greedy and evil CEO who was only charging $13.50.

If I understand this correctly he basically bought a trademark. So anyone can make that drug and call it "Fuckyoushkreli"
So the problem is that there are no generics available, even though any company could make them?

Doesn't that apply to pretty much everybody in Russia these days? The place is basically a country-sized supermax at this point.

Well, I am assuming that this Albanian piece of shit is not stupid and there is something to his plan. Maybe he plans to make enough money until generics kick in and then reduce prices back to normal, that would be consistent with M.O. of piece of shit like him from WallStreet.

Guys, this drug is a generic.

Shkreli is also a good argument as to why we ought to go back to confiscatory income tax rates.

It does seem like the most reasonable conclusion. People need this drug in order to not die and it would take a few months for anyone else to ramp up production of a generic version, so he can rake in some mega-profits for a bit before dropping the price back down to competitive levels.

No, it isn't. What definition of generic drug do you use?

If that's the case and $750 is overpriced then there are several companies out there that do generic drug lines.
