Democrats trying to unseat each other

Of the incumbents in that My Google Maps page, I'll look for patterns in their political careers. I'll add some others with a good progressive reputation:
  • AOC: intern, campaigner, activist, 2018 Rep NY-14
  • Ayanna Pressley: intern, staffer, 2009 Boston City Council, 2018 Rep MA-07
  • Rashida Tlaib: intern, staffer, 2008 MI House, 2018 Rep MI-13
  • Ilhan Omar: "community nutrition", campaigner, staffer, 2016 MN House, 2018 Rep MN-05
  • Raúl Grijalva: 1974 school board, 1989 county board of supervisors, 2002 Rep AZ-07, AZ-03
  • Ro Khanna: campaigner, bureaucrat, 2016 Rep CA-17
  • Pramila Jayapal: activist, staffer, 2014 WA Senate, 2016 Rep WA-07
  • Katie Porter: staffer, 2018 Rep CA-45
  • Joe Neguse: activist, staffer, bureaucrat, 2018 Rep CO-02
  • Jamie Raskin: 2006 MD Senate, 2016 Rep MD-08
  • Mark Pocan: 1991 county board of supervisors, 1998 WI Assembly, 2016 Rep WI-02
No evidence of a Donald Trump sort of career -- he went to the Presidency without ever having been elected to any other position or ever having been an employee of any politician. He was never a campaigner or an intern or a staffer or a high-level bureaucrat. That also makes him unique among Presidents -- every other President was either elected to some other position, the employee of some politician, or both.

Alexandra Rojas of Justice Democrats Is Helping to Elect More AOCs | Vogue

Alexandra Rojas's father, an engineer, is the sun of Peruvian immigrants, and her mother, now a real-estate agent, immigrated from Colombia at age 9. She grew up in Connecticut, first in East Hartford, then in Glastonbury, a place that her parents moved to because of its nicer public schools. Something like AOC on how one's zip code determining one's destiny. She hated her high school and didn't do very well here - some of the students would wear expensive clothes and toss out their lunches.

After graduation, she went to California and tried to get into a University of California college. She was not very successful, so she worked at low-paying jobs and went to a community college, with the hope of eventually getting educated enough to be able to earn enough to keep her parents out of nursing homes. Then she found out about Bernie Sanders's 2016 campaign, and she was also rejected for in-state tuition at UCLA. She drove all the way to Burlington VT and offered her services to BS's campaign. She moved on from that to Brand New Congress, and then into the Justice Democrats when it split off from BNC. She's now the Executive Director of JD.

Brand New Congress - Home - Brand New Congress - Brand New Congress - Ballotpedia
Justice Democrats - Home - Justice Democrats - Justice Democrats - Ballotpedia

AR prefers to assist others in running for office, rather than running for office herself or becoming an assistant of someone in office, as some other BNC/JD people had become. Saikat Chakrabarti and Corbin Trent were AOC staffers for a while, but SC quit and CT is now working on AOC's re-election.

AR's age of 24 is rather typical. Varshini Prakash of the Sunrise Movement is 26. AOC is 29. Jessica Cisneros is 26, and if elected, she would unseat AOC as the youngest woman ever elected. About AR, "At conferences she tends to be at least a decade younger than other leaders in the space. (Thirty-somethings can get touchy about it: “I’m young too, you asshole!”)"

One of the JD candidates:
Jamaal Bowman, a middle school principal who founded a public school in the North Bronx and was a voice in New York’s movement to opt out of standardized testing.

With JD’s support, Bowman is attempting to primary Eliot Engel, the chair of the House Foreign Affairs committee, who has been in Congress for 31 years, representing the 16th district since 2013. Rojas sees “the same recipe for success” as she did with the Ocasio-Cortez campaign: a “compelling young leader that reflects the community,” a “majority, minority district with a plurality of people of color who have been represented by an older career establishment politician that does not reflect the true diversity of that district, and who has taken millions from corporate PACs.” (Engel, it’s worth noting, is white; Bowman is black.)
The JD people look at the demographics of a district, the ideological record of the incumbent, and also the history of service of the proposed candidate. No narcissistic businesspeople allowed, it seems.
(Getting the right candidates to actually run is a whole other story: “It’s hard to convince people, especially women of color,” says Rojas. “But it was a lot harder in 2018.”) The art part is being able to tell who really walks the walk, and who will be able to keep walking it once they get into office, when they’ll be “surrounded by 400 people telling you not to be who you are. It’s about what you have experienced in your life that’s prepared you to withstand that pressure.”
Pressure that AOC has described. Like having only 48 hours to vet a bill before it will be voted on. Only 48 hours to vet some 1000-page appropriations bill that might contain some gross lobbyist insertion. In Paul Ryan's day, it was even worse: 24 hours. Also the pressure of being considered an enemy if one does not support some bill.

Another one targeting Engel: "Andom Ghebreghiorgis, an Eritrean-American special education teacher, currently third in the polls."

The DCCC has decided not to work with any company that supports a candidate that challenges an incumbent.
More recently the Congressional Black Caucus has come out swinging, accusing JD of specifically targeting seats held by CBC members (JD has endorsed insurgent candidates in two CBC districts, but both primary challengers are also black: “We’re not just targeting black caucus members,” says Rojas. “We’re targeting everybody, because no politician should assume they deserve a seat without having to work for it”).
About Reshma Saujani of "Girls Who Code" (she once interviewed AOC) - "Her living room bookshelves display framed photos of Saujani and her husband with the Clintons and the Bidens, but for years she says she was persona non grata in Democratic politics, after an attempted 2010 primary run against House Rep Carolyn Maloney."

AOC recalls getting a little bit of that, though not much.

Those three are up against Rep.  Carolyn Maloney - she is 73 years old and she is in her 14th term in the House. She is now head of the Oversight Committee and she's vice-chair of the Financial Services Committee (headed by Maxine Waters).

Everyone wants to be the next AOC. And that’s the problem. | CSNY

The problem is vote splitting, a side effect of first-past-the-post voting. Some of these candidates are discussing dropping out if they are not as strong as fellow candidates.

Ugh. What makes Latin Americans so attracted to socialism? Latin America has a history of socialist/communist takeovers: Castro in Cuba, Allende in Chile, Sandanistas in Nicaragua, Chavez in Venezuela, Morales in Ecuador. I am sure I am forgeting some. Then there is the attempted takeover of Colombia by communist terrorist group FARC.
And now these "Latinxes" want to take over USA in the name of socialism.

Jamaal Bowman, a middle school principal who founded a public school in the North Bronx and was a voice in New York’s movement to opt out of standardized testing.
Because without standardized testing, there is nothing to counteract grade inflation.

(Engel, it’s worth noting, is white; Bowman is black.)
That alone makes him the enemy in the eyes of the far left. Even worse, he is Jewish. The only Jews acceptable to far leftists of JD are those who, like Bernie, want to take military aid from Israel and give it to Hamas.

By the way, while Vogue goes out of its way to emphasize that the two JD opponents of Engel are middle school principal and special ed teacher respectively, they never mention that Engel himself worked as teacher and guidance counselor.

There Are Now 18 House Republicans Retiring. What Does This Mean For 2020? | FiveThirtyEight - only 6 Democrats retiring.
It’s not always easy to nail down why someone has decided to leave public office, and there could be a number of factors at play, including dissatisfaction with President Trump, reelection worries or loss of institutional clout. But given that many of these recent retirees have been members of the House for at least two decades and would have been safe bets for reelection, their retirements could be taken as a sign that many Republicans aren’t confident in their party’s ability to win a majority in 2020. By contrast, only six Democrats have said they won’t seek reelection in 2020.

What to call this progressive movement that involves primarying long-time incumbents? I've seen "Herbal Tea Party", but that term has not caught on.

The original tea party in US politics was The Boston Tea Party - destruction of some tea shipments as a protest of colonialist policies.

I checked on  Brand New Congress, and for 2020, it is only supporting Democrats. As the  Justice Democrats have been doing. This is unlike 2018, where BNC supported a Republican and an Independent alongside some Democrats.

United States Senate election in Maine, 2020 - Ballotpedia - Susan Collins has not declared yet, if she will ever do so, and four Democrats are now in the race, including one backed by BNC and JD: Betsy Sweet. Three independents are also in the race. Betsy Sweet for U.S. Senate - an activist.

It's rather evident from this list what this Herbal Tea Party's main priorities are. Ending the wars is rather low on the list, something that likely explains why Tulsi Gabbard has gotten very little traction in the Presidential campaign. Ending the wars is the *only* issue that she cares about. By comparison, the HTP candidates' top issue is Medicare for All, and healthcare has been prominent in the Presidential campaign.

Was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Win a Fluke, or Did It Pave the Way for Other Women?
A few months after Mckayla Wilkes announced her candidacy for Congress, she was approached by a state delegate at a community event in Maryland’s 5th district, where she is seeking a seat. Maybe she wants to be supportive, Wilkes thought, before quickly realizing that was not the case. Instead, the delegate was upset that Wilkes dared mount a campaign against House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, the second most powerful Democrat in the House of Representatives. “She told me that with Steny Hoyer, we have seniority,” says Wilkes. “Without seniority, we have nothing.”

Wilkes is a 29-year-old black project analyst and part-time college student running on a progressive platform that advocates for the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and criminal justice reform. She rejects corporate donations, instead relying on small-dollar donors and grassroots support. Hoyer, by contrast, is an 80-year-old white man who has been in Congress for 40 years who has urged Democrats to stick to a centrist, moderate message.
That's a problem that AOC had confronted. In "Knock Down The House", someone asks her at a house party about Joe Crowley's seniority and the power he has in the Democratic hierarchy. She responded by asking how much he has used his power to do things that benefit his district. Not much, it seems.

MW didn't think that she was very viable, because of her getting on the wrong side of the law on a few occasions. Like juvenile detention for truancy and jail for driving with a suspended license.
But it's also because she thought all politicians were "older, have all the credentials, are politically connected, and have been working in politics their entire life" and she would never measure up. “I thought that I had to get a college degree and I had to become a lawyer, and I had to become politically connected in order to run for office,” Wilkes says.
That's what AOC thought -- that one had to have money and/or connections to get into office. But she got some experience by being an intern and a campaigner.
For instance, of the 19 women who ran against Democratic incumbents for House seats in the 2018 midterm elections, only two won: Ocasio-Cortez and Pressley.
That's a 1 in 10 success rate.
While more progressive women may be inspired to take on incumbents now than before 2018, they are still likely to run up against a unique set of challenges, even from within their own party. In March, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the party’s powerful fundraising arm, announced that it would not work with any private political vendors who work with Democratic primary challengers.
Not very democratic.

Police reform

Cori was on the front lines of Ferguson fighting for justice after the killing of Mike Brown. Since then, she has continued to be an advocate for police reform and accountability. Working to demilitarize the police and increasing effective de-escalation trainings are a high priority
Like AOC, she was documented in "Knock Down The House". Paula Jean Swearengin is also running, though Amy Vilela is not.

AOC is an absolute republican dream. She is helping republicans. She's part of the problem now. Kurt Schrader is a great representative. He was my rep several years ago. He's a great guy. He's in a bell weather county (AOC would never win in Marion and Polk county). Republicans have poured money into his opponents.

Some of the BNC candidates duplicate JD ones, and are omitted. There are also some candidates that were added since that article was written.

There are currently 34 BNC candidates and 14 JD candidates, with a total of 43 - 5 of the candidates are duplicates, including AOC.

More bullshit. If a democrat can win, and a person can win among democrats, the progressive will win; anyone who could vote for a republican in this political climate of McConnell, Trump, and party line votes is already lost.

Instead of relying on DINOS, we can get the youth to start voting by actually representing them. If you don't like the fact that people want progress, maybe you should ask yourself if your own priorities are in the right place. Fixing our problems requires more than electing the same people who never even once actually made real efforts to fix said problems. If these jackasses worked with progressives we never would have decided they needed to be primaried.

How is she supposed to be doing that?

Hint: Fox News is not the greatest source in the world on her. The right wing has long had a strategy of demonizing whoever is perceived as a Democratic leader. Pres. Bill Clinton. VP Al Gore. Sen. Harry Reid. Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Pres. Barack Obama. Now they are doing it to her.

She recalls growing up with all these right-wing attacks, and she has decided not to let the right wing control the narrative about her. I like how she responds without being very nasty.

Meet the 26-year-old socialist trucker running for Congress on TikTok - The Verge
Joshua Collins looks like just about every other young person on TikTok. His nails are painted black, his videos are set to trending songs, and he’s not afraid to dunk on fascists online. But where many young people use the app for clout or entertainment, Collins’ TikTok has become the centerpiece for a new kind of political campaign — one he hopes will carry him all the way to Congress.

Collins is a 26-year-old socialist truck driver running to represent Washington state’s 10th district in Congress, which covers parts of Olympia, Spanaway, and Puyallup. Collins launched his campaign in April after watching Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) triumphant 2018 primary and deciding anything was possible. He had just turned 25, even younger than AOC and skirting the edge of the minimum age for House members to be sworn in.

“In 2018, that was huge. It changed everything. We went from ‘we should do this’ to ‘we can do this’,” Collins told The Verge. “There’s no way to describe how big an impact that had on the grassroots activist communities.”

For most of 2019, the odds were stacked heavily against Collins. The solid-blue seat had been held for three terms by Denny Heck, a Democrat who took the 2018 election by nearly 30 points. But in December, Heck announced his retirement and threw the race wide open. Collins still faces steep competition from more conventional candidates — particularly former state Rep. Kristine Reeves and former Tacoma mayor Marilyn Strickland — but his odds are now better than anyone expected.

Collins also has one crucial advantage over Reeves and Strickland: he’s kind of famous online.
Then describing his use of TikTok (videos) and Discord (like Slack and IRC). He's careful to try to keep out right-wing trolls. He has rules like "don’t be toxic; keep the server a safe, inclusive space; and engage with others in good faith."

He calls himself a socialist.
He supports the Green New Deal, but he wants to put even more pressure on oil and gas companies and the government to create change, including nationalizing power production. He wants to abolish not just Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) but also the CIA. He supports Medicare for All, but he also wants to cancel all medical debt and make all prescription medication free.

...
“I grew up with the internet and I know how everything works, but it’s a lot more than that,” Collins said. “My online personality is me, even as a candidate. I don’t talk like a politician, I don’t post like one, and regular people can tell the difference between a canned social media strategy and a candidate who’s accessible online.”

She's helping the republicans by flanking moderate democrats with further left candidates in swing states. She's incredibly naïve if she thinks that her agenda can win in rural Georgia or rural Oregon. These areas are very conservative. There are a secret cabal of far left teenagers just waiting to vote for the mythical socialist hero in these areas. I grew up in Oregon 5th district. It's a very conservative area (compared to Multnomah county and Portland with is liberal and mostly carries the state). For most of life it was controlled by a conservative (Denny Smith was one). I saw moderate and liberal democrat after democrat lose to the republican every two years. Representative Schrader first ran and won in 2009. He's just a great guy. I personally worked on his campaign and have donated. Every election for him is very tight. The republicans hate him. He owns a farm. His republican neighbors plant hateful signs around their properties that he and his kids have to see as they drive home. (Republicans love their offensive signs).

Anyway, he runs as far left as he can! He believes in science. He's very pro environment, pro science, pro women's rights, pro tribal rights and human dignity. He favors lowering the costs of college and opening it up, increasing access to health care for people, and etc. He's done a lot to help the tribes. He and I are both involved in the adoption community. He really cares about helping kids. Does work in the foster care system that you'll never see on the news. I know him personally. He's a great caring guy. Some people on the left got upset with him because he didn't pass a couple very anti gun legistition. So a guy on the left wants to run against him. Kurt will beat him, but it will be costly. It's going to hurt his chances when he runs against the republican. The republicans know that this is a 50-50 district, so they always pour the resources into our district for the republican. And AOC is doing what she can to open up the cracks for the republicans to expose. Thanks AOC.
