Raised nominally Catholic, privately disbelieved it during childhood. I held the mistaken view that religious beliefs were harmless and private. Then the 9/11 attacks, gay marriage debates, and further study made clear how much damage religion has done to people in the past and present, and will in the future. Separation of church and state is not enough, we need separation of religion and planet. Open criticism of bad ideas, such as religious beliefs, should be encouraged.
