In North Carolina they are trying to pass a bill that would give teachers a 5% raise if they get police training and carry a gun.

These "teacher resource officers" could carry guns in an open or concealed manner, and they would have the same arrest powers as police officers, the bill says.

Ok, if this passes, how long before a teacher shoots someone? And will the usual suspects who defend every police shooting of an unarmed person defend a teacher shooting an unarmed student?

When I started at my job, one of my co-workers was a former teacher. Several times a week he could be found slamming he keyboard on his desk and angrily swearing at his computer. Him with a gun? At the very least I would think he would need a new monitor at some point.

Such bills are really just political theater designed to bolster support from supporters and to demonize the opponents. In this case, I'd wager that school districts are not clamoring en masse for this policy. I'd expect them to lobby against such a bill.

Yea, I would expect most to be against the bill. But when has the opinions of the people mattered when they are trying to keep the NRA happy? The ones I'm worried about are the few teachers that want this to pass.

The good news is fights are very rare at schools, so opportunities of chaos where a gun all of sudden has managed to enter the scenario is so unlikely... because high schools are docile and stuff like that never happens.

Seconded. I suspect a decent number will get the training for the pay raise but will they actually carry? I doubt it. It's not a good idea with the lack of discipline in schools these days. Guns would be snatched.

This is a terrible idea. These teachers will probably only get 10% the training the average cop gets. How many accidental cop shooting incidents are there per year? This act will quadruple the amount of accidental shootings at the least.

Well, I've been advocating breading gun glorification out of kids for awhile now. Lets face it, guns are a part of the American culture and legislating them isn't going to get the job dune because politicans love their cushy little jobs too much to really buck the system.

If you demand something of politicians that they don't really want to do, they will always find a scapegoat to deflect attention away from themselves. This is one of those scapegoat moves and I'll bet it won't end here. Next they will have parent volunteers walking the halls with concealed carry licenses on them. How'd you like your son's ex-girlfriends dad walking the hall after he broke up with her or the mom who yells obscenities at the baseball coach when her little boy doesn't get to bat enough for her?
