Bent Out Of Shape Over Parent's Birthday Gift Request

Clearly they never had children. The 1 yr olds don't really know what is going on. The second and definitely third birthday is when the fun is having.

Even then, I know we've been pondering just how much is enough. There seems to be a misnomer among many Americans that many gifts means love and affection.

Holy crap! That letter writer is a huge dick.

He's fond of quote marks, isn't he? And also very careful obfuscation. "Dear Carolyn: My household received a written invitation to a birthday party for a 1-year-old." I'm guessing the letter writer is not the one invited to the party. Maybe their granddaughter is a favored babysitter.

But whatever, the attendance is not mandatory, the donation is not mandatory, and you don't have to give your donation, if you make one, to THAT charity. I've been getting 'made in your name' donation announcements as gifts my whole life. No one ever called and asked if I wanted the money to go to liberal or conservative, pro- or -anti-abortion, manatees or dolphins, fur coats or baby seals.... A lot of the 'a donation has been made in your name' gifts I've gotten said more about what the gift giver wanted to give than anything i'd be interested in supporting with my birthday money.
