Lesson one from Tim Synder's On Tyranny: "Do not obey in advance. Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do."

LA times (owned by billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong) and WA Post (owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos) have prohibited their papers from endorsing a candidate this election, despite the editorial boards of each wanting to do so.

While it is true that such an endorsement would be unlikely to change a single vote, it highlights the trend that billionaires are obeying Trump in advance, in anticipation of his possible win, to spare themselves the potential of retribution. A true act of cowardice.

You are seeing it repeatedly. Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Jamie Dimon, among others are all not publically endorsing anyone despite having been in support of Democrats in the past.

Or you are seeing outright direct support for Trump, with Elon Musk, Peter Thiel as some obvious examples.

They know nothing will happen to them if Kamala gets elected (other than maybe a few percent higher tax rate, at worst). But they fear what a Trump presidency could mean if they show any public opposition to him.

The oligarch class is beginning to fall in line, signaling their obedience to Trump to gain favor for their business interests and spare them from his wrath.
