Center for Story-based Strategy - I'm posting on it because it's interesting to see how it works.

Intro to Story-Based Strategy — Center for Story-based Strategy - It is advocacy by constructing narratives and by countering opposing narratives.

It starts out with these ingredients of story:
  • Conflict - The backbone of narrative, what defines the drama, point of view, and makes the story interesting
  • Characters - The subjects, protagonists, and narrators of stories
  • Imagery - Words to capture imagination with metaphor, anecdote, and descriptions that speak to the senses and make the story tangible
  • Foreshadowing - The ways that a story provides hints to its outcome
  • Underlying Assumptions - Unstated parts of the story that must be accepted in order to believe the narrative is true
Conflicts can take a variety of forms: character against him/her/itself, character against another character, character against environment.

It then gets into these four steps.

Break Down The Power

Goal, Audience, Target, Constituency

Battle of the Story

Break down one's opponents' stories and figure out how to challenge them

Put your audience in the front row

  • Imagine the audience(s) for your story as specifically as possible.
  • See your work through the eyes of your audience.
  • Is your audience INSIDE our movements?

Where will you intervene?

Advocacy by scenario brings to mind right wingers' attacks on "welfare queens" like  Linda Taylor, someone who bilked welfare agencies out of at least $8,000, and who was suspected of a lot of other criminality.  Welfare queens are depicted as someone who lives a luxurious life at the expense of poor hardworking suffering exploited oppressed taxpayers.

On the other side, there is a very beautiful video made by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Molly Crabapple, Naomi Klein, and some others: A Message From the Future With Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Transcript in “A Message from the Future with AOC” [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez]

It is a depiction of how AOC's Green New Deal might work out over the next decade. AOC herself narrated it and Molly Crabapple did the drawing of it.
