The officer was at a house in the 4100 block of Chandler Drive investigating a hit-and-run case about 3:10 p.m., Columbus police spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis said.

As the officer was walking from the home to his patrol car, a woman a few houses away called out to him, saying her sister and the girl’s mother, Andrea Ellis, had cut herself.

The officer was at the doorway when a dog charged at him, Alex-Bouzounis said.

The officer fired once, missing the animal but striking the girl in the right leg. It was unclear whether the girl was hit directly or by a ricochet.

. . .

The officer was not injured.

Well, thank god for that.

The Inquisitr reported that Ellis later identified the officer in a Facebook post as Jonathan Thomas, saying that when Kelly rejected his argument that the dog charged at him, Thomas “told [Kelly] to stop yelling at him and walked back to his vehicle.”

“Officer Thomas never said sorry,” Ellis wrote. “Never said it was an accident, never said that he called for help or was going to call for help, never asked if Ava was ok, and never asked if he could check on Ava.”

The girl would subsequently need surgery, and Ellis said doctors have told her she could walk with a limp for the rest of her life.

What was the dog's fur color, and what race was the cop? We can't make a moral judgement on this story with that crucial information.

Well, I don't like blaming the victim, but I have no problem blaming the victim's aunt.

She chose to invite Thomas into her home while there was a child there, knowing fully well that he was a police officer. That this would result in his shooting an innocent person in the house was a completely forseeable outcome which she should have taken into account before calling him over and yet she did not. This negligent lack of concern for the welfare of the child on her part is what caused the girl to be shot.

I suspect you're joking but this is absolutely the truth. Only fools would invite patrol police into their lives. Even if they aren't malicious they would still resent you for giving them extra work. Couple that with their paranoia and victim complex you're just inviting a powder keg into your life.

And, of course, everyone knows that when a dog charges at you, the proper response is to pull out a gun and to start firing. Really, this police officer needs to go back to school.

How many times does this need to happen before American realize that they need stricter animal control laws?
