NPR had Bill Otis on yesterday to talk about AG Sessions wanting to throw the book at all drug offenders. Bill Otis was the General Counsel under President Bush (the professional one). Near the end of the interview, he was defending tossing the book at everyone with a very familiar argument.

Bill Otis (NPR Interview) said:
Low-level offenders seems to me to be an undefined phrase. You don't know exactly what low level means. Often it's used to mean a courier in a drug business. What people don't realize as much as they should is that a courier in the drug business is just as essential as a car is in a pizza delivery business. The business - unless you can deliver your inventory, the business is going to fall apart.
I found that argument quite intriguing. Wonder why they don't use that for economic policy.

The mind of the prohibitionist is akin to the mind of the fascist.

Always looking for more and more power over others.

What the world needs less of are prohibitionists.

Their schemes produce gangs and violence.

They have nothing productive to offer.

I don't think "power" is the word. In my neighborhood, we had a racial like kerscuffle. Some kids (black) were behaving inappropriately (I wouldn't dare say badly), and what some people (white) wanted more than anything else was to punish the wrong doers. And we see that with the above, and in Trump's campaign... the whole "LAW AND ORDER!!!" thing. Some people want people that break laws to be punished.

The most "ironic" thing to come of this is the exact mandatory sentencing guidelines that the two ranchers in Oregon were convicted and serving time for because of their violation... and then a bunch of angry armed white people thought that was wrong... because white people were victims of "LAW AND ORDER!!!"... I'm sorry, I mean "THE GOVERNMENT!!!"

But in the end, they (whites) want people that they think are nonviable to their worldview (almost anyone else) to suffer great consequences for any sort of infraction. And in the above case, actually use Marxism to justify it.

There are problems from centuries of slavery and decades of legal segregation and now decades of the war on people called the drug war.

These problems are gaping and wide.

It will take decades of concentrated effort and massive expenditure of resources to BEGIN to address the problems of so much abuse.

But prohibitionists create more problems then they solve. They should not be controlling any policy.
