How much influence does a celebrity have when they are proclaimed as being the "face of" a product ? I see that Calvin Klein has announced that one of the Jenner girls is to feature prominently for their wares. This on the back of douche bag Justin Beiber in a similar role. There is also the strange situation where Kanye West is some sort of designer for Adidas. A quick look at that line tells me it's all shit.

Is advertising a science or an art ? In general, I shy away from products that use celebrity endorsements. What makes advertisers and marketers think that having the likes of Beiber on board will help shift more units of Klein's unremarkable underwear ? Is it that women are motivated to buy this crap for their men ?

It's a very strange phenomenon I think.

No, it's endlessly entertaining.

A professional athelete who hopes that millions of men will respect his opinion enough to buy the shaving cream or deodorant or outboard motor or urinary problem product that he's fond of, gets all kinds of upset if his (racist/antifeminist/other bigotry) comments are picked up by the national media and he's held accountable. We listened to your opinion, buddy, wasn't that your hope for a post-sport career?

Or an anti-gun activist acts surprised that people noticed that she did ads for Walmart...whihc sells guns.

Or a compay with clothes that include furs get upset that a model of theirs posed for PETA...

Not quite a laugh a minute, but the laughs you DO get are usually lasting ones.

Some of it is entertaining but I find it mind boggling. Sears for example. They started to sell a line of clothes that was supposedly designed by the Kardashian women. I walked into the store (taking a short cut to get to the parking lot, honest !) and there were life size cardboard cut outs of the three of them (Kim, Kourtney and the one that looks like a Wookiee) and I just laughed. Who in their right mind would think that image would entice anybody into buying their tat ?

Well, they have to have some reason to think that it works or they'd stop doing it.
And as we're a celebrity-focused society, it's easy to believe that it works.
Look at how many people are famous celebrities exactly because they're famous celebrities. Celebs used to have to accomplish something first, now they need no more than placement.

It does work.

Jessica Simpson is a multi-millionaire due to her line of clothing, shoes and accessories, not her acting or singing.
