LONDON—The University of London's Senate House Library is one of the finest academic research institutions in England. On a recent day, a lecture room in the imposing Art Deco building was filled with the world's pre-eminent authorities on a talking mongoose named Gef.

In a nation long fascinated by the supernatural, the case of Gef the talking mongoose stands out as one of the most bizarre in British paranormal history. Though he is largely forgotten, a small but obsessive band of researchers refuses to let Gef go.

Mongooses don't have the vocal equipment to talk like humans.

Even though it's commonly recognized as the hoax it is, I rather like the eery detail that it's called a mongoose, but it's physically described as something creepier. It's described as having larger "hands" than hindfeet, for example (based on it strangling rabbits and maybe some hoaxed tracks). So it's basically harmless and childlike if a bit eccentric in the story, but is vaguely hinted at being something demonic.

EDIT: ...and of course since largely most people didn't actually see it in the stories (aside from glowing eyes in the dark in some instance), this lends a sense of mystery to the thing.

Is Gef the Talking Mongoose advising us on what stocks to buy? Has he/she been hired by a Wall Street Bookie Firm as an analyst? A mongoose could do as well as the yuppie MBAs they have now.
