So, one of the world's greatest tennis players, Naomi Osaka dropped out of the French Open. It is heralded as being great for her and many people are lauding her. I'm left dumbfounded.

We had a situation where a person who opened up about suffering from depression, had to quit the French Open, because the professionals running the tournament told her to effectively 'suck it up'. While I'm glad some people are backing and supporting Osaka, I'm wondering why there isn't much in the way of condemnation of the Roland Garros fining her and pushing her out of the tournament.

Mr. Moretton said in a statement that tournament organizers wished her the “quickest possible recovery.”
Yeah, fuck you! You are in the actual position to help her, and instead you let her walk away and help with providing a bit more stigma. This is just again another pathetic situation where we start talking about mental health, instead of ACTING on mental health.

It does seem odd the depression seems to only effect her ability to do press conferences.

Can you elaborate on what the organizers could have done to help her? The press conferences are part of the contractual obligation she agreed to when she signed up for the tournament. I understand that the questions can be inane, and sometimes confrontational, but they're part of the package.

When I first read about her battle with depression, which seems to be more difficult at this particular tournament, I wondered why she didn't step away for at least a short time to focus more on her mental health instead of her Grand Slam record.

There has to be a middle ground. Why is a press conference so important that one of the top tennis players in the world can't play in a major tennis tournament... because she can't handle press conferences? Is that why people are paying the big bucks to attend the press conferences (not the tennis matches). Dude! I got fourth row for the semi-final press conference! Is there no way to work around the press conference, so that the media can get some sound bites while Osaka doesn't have to fall deeper into anxiety based depression? They hope she gets better... when it is the arbitrary requirements that are what is making her depressed, as if she is broken!

Bjorn, Nadal, Agassi, Graf known for their world class press conference performances?

There may be a middle ground, but announcing in the middle of the tournament that you don't intend to fulfill the terms of your contract isn't the way to start looking. She could have, and should have, brought this to the tournament organizers months ago, so they could at least have had a chance to work out a solution that would be beneficial to her. Her issue didn't spring up overnight. "I'm going to blindside everyone, but I still want to play and keep the money" isn't ethical.
