She had been fetching water in northern Uttarakhand state when the leopard pounced on her from nearby bushes - she fought back with a sickle and spade.

"I thought I was dead but I did not lose patience and courage," she told reporters after her lucky escape.

"I fought head on with it for almost half an hour. Then I came to know it was dead," she told reporters from hospital in the nearby town of Srinagar Garhwal.

That's pretty badass.

Most people would prefer not to have huge facial scars and mauled hands after confronting an animal. Death is not the only metric when judging choices about self defense. She needed a gun if she didn't wanted to end up in the hospital in that condition.

That means she needs a whole lot of things before she gets to gun.

It is indeed badass. I'm trying to work out, though, why you posted it in the Politics forum. What political point does this story exemplify?

The woman murders an unarmed leopard youth with a scythe and she's treated like a hero.

It shows we still have a long way to go to overcome our anti-leopard speciest feelings.
