It appears that a previous undisclosed gap between pipes of a couple miles was causing oil to just spill out of the thing. You'd think they'd have buried it too. ;)

Yes, this is old news.

Well, it was newsworthy enough to get an AP story.

Maybe next they'll do a story on some kid spilling a glass of milk at dinner.

Like mom always said, it's not a matter of if glasses of milk will spill, it's a matter of when.

I can't believe there's such a big fucking deal about an accidental spilling of 100 gallons of oil. I was driving around town the other day and was "admiring" the many dozens of square miles of asphalt roads, shopping malls, car dealerships, office buildings, etc that cover the ground where I live. Ground that has been essentially sterilized and devoid of any form of plant or animal life. Destroyed and lost forever. Now that's some serious environmental damage, and no one seems to blink an eye. A pipeline leaks and basically kills a few square feet of land in the middle of North-fucking-Dakota and its big news around the country. Get some perspective people!

Being against the DAPL is not about perspective. It's about chapter and verse of a religion. Pipelines spill small amounts every day. People filling up their cars at gas stations spill small amounts every day. But this is the DAPL. (Even though technically one of the spills wasn't even on the DAPL.) The environmental faith has actually learned where this pipeline is so it's a portent of the apocalypse.

It's like when they learned the word "fracking" and every story was about "fracking this" of "fracker that" even when the event in question had nothing to do with fracking.

Apparently this is not newsworthy enough to even get a response. Go figure
Actually it was a joke, but I can understand that you couldn't get the point.

Not me. A lot of my work revolves around the consequences of turning permeable ground into impermeable ground.

And of course, if people started complaining about it, in general, you'd mock them too and find something else they should whine about instead.

Bring it on! My company helps oil companies clean up their messes. Keep spilling that oil! We also help oil companies find water for fracking so keep using as much oil as possible!;)

Pipelines are being approved and built all over the country without a single protest. As long as we keep burning hydrocarbons, oil, in our cars and in our homes, we have to do it in the most efficient and responsible way possible. This means that we should exploit domestic sources and to transport it in the most efficient and the safest way possible. This means fracking and building pipelines.

Because of global warming we do have to develop alternatives to burning hydrocarbons, gas and oil in transportation and coal and eventually natural gas in power generation. And the burning of hydrocarbons can be done more efficiently while we are still developing and deploying the alternatives.

There is no more intractable problem that we face than this one. Conservatives refuse to even admit that there is a problem and liberals refuse to accept most of the solutions. The climate is heating up ten times faster than any natural cause has at any time in the recorded history of a million years or so of gases trapped in ice sheets around the world. Solar and wind power aren't viable solutions for generating baseline electrical power, 80 to 85% of the electrical power consumed, and there is no battery on the horizon that would make them viable for generating base electrical power. The only responsible possibility is nuclear power.
