The victim, who had lived in Yellville for more than 20 years, was an experienced hunter, so Purdom said he doubted that his injuries were a result of poor hunting practice. Instead, he said, it seems to have been an unusual accident.

Yeah, there is nothing funny about someone dying, but near the end of the article, 'it seems to have been an unusual accident" just felt a bit odd. Well sure, I doubt the deer had committed a premeditated act to murder the hunter, like the hunter aimed to kill the deer, but to call this an 'accident' just feels a bit off.

Not poor hunting practice?

I’d call it poor hunting practice if your methods puts you next to injured wildlife that you don’t know for sure is dead.
If that were at work, there’d be a lock-out-tag-out to make sure you waited the 30 minutes. Or you shoot it again whne you get close.

My uncle shot a guinea hen for dinner one day after deer hunting. We saw it kand, it saw us, and froze, hoping to go unnoticed.
He shot it from five feet away, shotgun, sluicing it into the ground.
As he reached for it, another took flight. His eyes and gun tracked the movement.
As soon as he turned, the 'dead' hen took flight right out from under his grip.
Startled, he tried to spin and shoot the bird. Missed the hen, the stovk took him in the balls, knocking him on his ass, winded and crying.

I did not laugh, but only because i was unsure how many rounds he had left.


I said many nice things about the canned chili we ate that night.
