Melania Trump's announcement last week that she was autographing and auctioning a hat for personal profit with two other items -- for an opening bid of $250,000 -- has left even those who know the former first lady well puzzling over her decision.

Trump is auctioning the white, wide-brimmed, crepe hat she wore in April 2018, for the state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the White House. The hat, created by Trump's personal stylist, the designer Hervé Pierre, was made to match the white Michael Kors Collection suit she wore for the occasion; the suit was off-the-rack, the hat was bespoke.

In addition to the hat, Trump has included a watercolor of her face in profile, wearing the hat -- what her website calls "The Head of State Collection" -- and a non-fungible-token (NFT) of the watercolor, with some animation. An NFT is a digital collectible authenticated by the blockchain that is often a piece of digital art. The NFT is the second one featuring herself. The first, a watercolor of her eyes, was put up for sale for a limited time, ending December 31. Bidding on the current auction -- with the hat, the watercolor and the NFT -- closes January 25, according to Trump's website.

A portion of the proceed is supposed to go to an unnamed charity. The chuckle effect here is that the average Trump supporter could never ever dream of buying that hat. Again exposing the disparity of alleged wealth of Trump and his brazen supporters who think he gives a damn about them.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. Do you think the average Biden voter can afford a $250,000 hat worn by Jill Biden, or would care?

You surely don't believe the economically elite Democrat politicians are somehow less hypocritical do you?

Do other |multi-billionaire's sell their wives' clothing? I'd like George Soros' suspenders as a souvenir; how much moolah will they set me back?

The real chuckle is how money-grubbing this "billionaire" family is. Recall that Junior's $6 membership in the Boy Scouts is shown on the Trump Foundation's books as a $6 charitable contribution to Boy Scouts of America.

Is Jill selling her hat? I missed that news item.

Or, since Trump is a corrupt money-grubbing brat, do his supporters need to pretend that all Democrats are also money-grubbing brats? Biden has millions now: book publishers practically force money onto ex-Vice Presidents. (Do you think that, as an alleged communist, he had an obligation to give every penny to charity?)

But Biden had been a distinguished Senate leader (and "elite Democrat politician") LONG before he served as V.P. and ...
In 2006 Joe Biden ranked #100 among 100 Senators by wealth. Despite a whopping $32k in a Fidelity Fund, $32k in a Delaware State pension fund, and over $8k in real estate wealth, his net worth was MINUS $12,492.
What do you think of that, Metaphor?

I thought Melania was selling it, not Donald.

I...don't know.

Biden has no obligation to give away his money, but I have no obligation to pretend he isn't part of the economic elite or believe he has any understanding of or solidarity with working class Americans.

I think if that is true, Biden is shockingly, catastrophically bad with his personal finances in a way that not even sustained bad luck could explain away.

By 2006, Biden had been a Senator for thirty three years, at a yearly income that is about three times the median household income in the US.

Where did I bring up hypocrisy? I certainly imply vanity and irony though.

From what I hear, Melania and Hunter Biden are teaming up together to create a company where they can sell their wares. Melania with her boring little hat and Hunter with his crappy 1/2 million dollar paintings. It's called, "RelativesofPresidentssellingoverpricedshit.com

Seriously, people are making money selling weird stuff these days. Some sort well known, sorta hot internet celebrity chick was recently selling small bottles of her used bath water for something like $50, iiirc. Another was eating beans, etc and farting into jars and selling her bottled farts. Both were having trouble keeping up with demand.

I don't know whether to admire their entreprenurial spirt, or weep for America.

You had something there, but it went off the rails. Though, to be fair, Hunter and Melania aren't very compatible.

It'd be funnier if Hunter was alone pawning off stuff from the White House. Something like:

However, his rousing speech slowed down in tempo and energy quickly and Hunter asked to be excused before coming back highly energetic. "This criminal must be stopped. Pawning these important treasures for drug money.... err... presumably... isn't right."

You can both, but I'd weigh more heavily on the weeping.

The people that worship the Trumps aren't anywhere near the sphere of their alleged wealth. That Trump would sooner call security if they tried to get into his golf course, than pal around with them. This is just another instance of this.

I find it ironic about how the first thing some folks do here is start trying to talk about people not the subject of discussion.

The fact is, some people have negative net value because, and get this, they don't seek to have more power than they need to accomplish their goals.

I need more power to accomplish my goals than Biden needed to accomplish his goals in the Senate: he had been elected to the power he needed and had no need to go out of that band to retain it.

Hey, its a hell of a world where fart fetishists can get their weird fix without bothering those around them.

I agree it's a little sad that they can't find happiness in the consensually delivered bean-laden emissions of closer and more immediate people in their lives for whatever reason, but I am happy that they can get it!

The reality is that people want us naming names other than Trump in this shit show. Trump is the only one showing shit at the shit show today.

We could talk about all sorts of unrelated shit, we could start a whole separate thread about how the some other family is pointedly NOT selling stupid shit.

This is about the families that are, in fact, selling stupid shit.

I don't see how that's ironic. Selling something is not an invitation to 'pal around' with the buyer.

The hat sold for "$180,000". Which is actually a lot of money for a hat worn by a third rate Jackie Kennedy. But, as one will notice, the money amount is in quotes. The sale was in crypto, which presumably is to be able to evade taxes. And the last couple of weeks, it has been hard on crypto. Crypto"currency" or also known as Libertarian Bucks, has no basis for value and whips around like crazy. It is currently on a down cycle. Crypto usually rebounds, somehow, and Trump might get the money she really wanted... or the crypto brand she (he?) is getting paid could die off.

Regardless, Melania Trump becomes the first Republican to try and pull a Clinton after leaving the White House and enriching herself (himself?) from being in the building for a while.
