Complementarianism is a conservative idea that women should be subject to husbands, that women have a duty to be submissive to men. Based on religious claims. Eve was created as a helpmeet to Adam for example. Complementarianism has become a toxic staple of toxic churches and toxic manhood.
I ran across an excellent history of this doctrine and its creation in a modern sense in the second half of the 20th century. This basically started as an anti-feminist protest.
