The president whose major policy achievement is mandatory health insurance thinks maybe voting should be mandatory, too.

Asked how to offset the influence of big money in politics, President Barack Obama suggested it's time to make voting a requirement.

"Other countries have mandatory voting," Obama said Wednesday in Cleveland, where he spoke about the importance of middle class economics, and was asked about the issue during a town hall.

He then pulled a fetus out a Christian woman and ate it.

Is he planning on implementing this by executive order as president or in his private capacity as a wealthy 1%er oligarch?

So long as they publish the numbers of spoiled ballots, why not?

If you think that mandatory voting is an infringement on our freedoms, what do you think of mandatory military service?

Unfortunately, you can't dodge the vote by acting crazy. The draft board didn't want to give guns to loonies, but in politics they get Senate seats....

It's an infringement of our freedoms.

Should being a member of society impose any responsibilities upon you?

Judging by the way people around me drive, it's not the responsibility that people reject, it's the inconvenience. What Obama should be doing is figuring out a way to make the voting work by drive-through. Like ATMs or photomat booths in mall parking lots or shopping centers. That'll turn out the vote.

I understand the argument for mandatory voting. I am not sure getting more people who either don't care or don't know to the polls is a good outcome. I suppose the hope is that forcing people to the polls will induce more of them to care or to educate themselves. But I find that a bit more than pollyannish.

I'm assuming that the Federal Government could only enforce voting for Federal election.

You don't have to vote. You can just hand an empty ballot.

Well, mandatory voting without funding will help overwhelm polls and make voting more miserable.

dismal's right, we don't have one "federal" election. We have 50 state elections for federal office.

Given that benefits are received: yes.

This is just another way to steal money from black people. First you shut down all the voter registration sections and polling locations in minority areas and then, after making it as difficult as possible for them to either register to vote or get out to vote, you start fining them for not voting.

Fuck you, Obama.

Actually if they wanted to increase voter participation, make it so that you can vote by text while driving. Then start a big public service campaign stating that voting while texting while driving is an irresponsible thing to do.

Next thing you know people will be voting in droves.

Good plan.

Wouldn't mandatory voting be a violation of the 1st amendment, in effect compelling speech and criminalizing those for not engaging in said speech?

Probably. And if not that the various penumbras and emanations that emanate from it or its general whereabouts.

Last time this came up I vowed that if they do this I would found a party that had as its sole platform to do away with mandatory voting.

Based on turnout levels, I think that party would get ~80% of the vote in off-cycle elections.
