The GOP Primary for the Ohio Senate seat being vacated by Rob Portman had all sorts of crazy involved. There is the pretty far to the right Josh Mandel (current Ohio Treasurer), who is attached the establishment but not really moderate, and also willing to tow the Trump line. There is JD Vance, who was less in the establishment and was highly critical of Trump in 2016... turn bending over so much for Trump that he is letting Trump rail him while he sucks Trump's balls. And then Matt Dolan (current Ohio State Senator) who was the establishment establishment person who thinks Trump might have actually lost the 2020 election. He came in third.
JD Vance came out strongly against abortion and with Roe / Casey coming up as DOA, that might become an issue on top of the issue that this guy isn't very experienced in politics.
The Democrats selected Tim Ryan, a conservative Democrat Sherrod Brown like clone. He isn't particularly liberal and he represented the rust belt... and Akron, because gerrymandering. But it also means he can carry the red Democrat voters.
Again, we see Mandel who would have been a favorite and Dolan, who probably could squeak a win gone for JD Vance, the guy who can lose to Ryan. This is far from a sure thing, but Ryan's chances against Vance are certainly better. Trump's endorsement has carried a bit more weight in primaries than general elections. Vance will be trotting out the "woke", "CRT" , and "Trump" bullshit like he did in his YouTube ads for the primary. It won't be much fun. But it is a seat that can be taken, in an election the Democrats are desperate to steal one or two seats.
