So far my understanding is that organic compounds were found in some very old rock.

It doesn't mean life. I have not watched the whole thing yet.

I think it would be a bigger story if it was determined that there were no organic compounds on Mars. After all, organic compounds are found in comets, in meteors, on Titan, etc.

The seasonal methane release is interesting. It may be geological, and probably is. But there is the off-chance of it being the result of microbial activity beneath the surface.
