Hundreds of BLM supporters storm Snohomish County neighborhood to protest at Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best’s home

Firsthand witnesses told the Lynnwood Times that a neighbor tipped off residents to dozens of vehicles traversing the street of the private residence of Best. Neighbors aware of Best’s physical home location, established a perimeter to protect her home from possible mischief. Best was not home at the time of the incident.

A crowd of about 200 persons, mostly white men and women in their twenties, were dressed in black with masks and black hoods and carried signs that read “Black Lives Matter.” Black Lives Matter protestors shouted profanity and insults at neighbors, took license plate information on vehicles, took pictures of homes, and asked little kids who lived in the neighborhood what schools they attended.

Is BLM just an excuse for young White people to behave like assholes?

Meeting up with your friends in order to protest at the home of a public official is an act of violence?

It certainly is, provided you are willing to argue in bad faith.

What I don't understand is why this is even allowed around here, to argue in such egregiously bad faith. What is even the point of a board dedicated, ostensibly, to rational discussion of issues when we allow people to discuss issues without actually being expected to be rational about it?

Truly, it boggles my mind.

i mean, yes to all of that.
but at the same time, you clicked on an OP by fucking *trausti* for fuck's sake, so what did you expect?

that's like going to medical school immediately out of high school, doing 8 years of college, doing your rotation, working as an understudy to an established doctor, creating a business plan, getting a loan, opening your own proctology practice, and on your first day after opening come home and decry "i'm looking at assholes all day, what the hell!?"

This does look a bit off, the incident I mean. I don't think I would applaud it.

The problem is the asking if this is all BLM is. Obviously it isn't. The skew isn't in the particular item being brought to our attention, it's in the underlying position.

I think a reasonable person could agree that there are aspects of BLM which are problematical.

Yea, bunch of thugs. 200 angry white people; shouting profanities, insulting neighbors, taking pictures of homes, asking kids in the area what schools they attend. Wow, not cool in a neighborhood. It's not cool to use intimidation and frighten people. Not cool.

I oddly found myself giving Trausti the benefit of the doubt on this one. If he really meant "Is BLM just an excuse" then it's a stupid statement. If what he actually meant was "has the BLM cause now been hijacked by some white people as an excuse to be assholes?" then he has a good, yet poorly worded, point. However, the number of white people doing that is very small compared to the overall cause. Either way, the rightists will grab on to this small number of assholes and try to represent the entire movement as such.

I agree.

I've got a question:

Is constantly only objecting to the extreme elements of something just an excuse to try to invalidate the whole of it? :)

Did you look at any other sources for information on the incident? Because reports vary.

This one, for example, states that

There was no evidence that protesters had engaged in any illegal activity that night in the small Snohomish town.

So what is your basis for claiming the protesters were thugs?

Maybe thugs is slightly too strong a word, based on what I've read so far, but otherwise I agree.

This wasn't illegal activity, but it is thuggish activity. It's what bullies do. It's trying to use intimidation to win an argument. It's Trumpian. It's not what liberals should support.

It seems more and more to be the only form of argumentation that gets attention. Demonize the extremes so we don't have to actually discuss the issue. I'm sure it's been going on forever but I've just recently started to notice it.

Never wise to give credit to a broken clock giving you the correct time.

I actually only came in to get the actual context from arctish and lay bare the hypocrisy and bad faith, and to further question why we even allow this kind of bullshit whiplash-inducing spin here in the first place.

I actually have Trausti on ignore.

Hi, Jarhyn! Have a wonderful day!

Pot meet kettle.

I genuinely find this new tactic of going to politicians’ homes to intimidate them very disturbing. A line has been crossed. At least Harry recognizes that and doesn’t try to excuse the behavior in bad faith.

At the times when I consider whether it's worthwhile to stay at this forum, it's the reason I think I might not. As you say, I think it's getting worse, probably for a variety of reasons.
