States say they should have control of these Federal Lands... but do they intend to pay the nation to buy them, or are they thinking they should just take them?

In recent years, some Republicans from Western states have been moving toward a position on transferring federal lands to individual states rather than giving the federal government more jurisdiction over those lands. The principle was even included in the 2016 Republican Party platform. Yet Trump selected Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT), who was opposed to the party platform's position on the land transfers, to be his nominee for secretary of the interior.

How much did the federal government pay the states for the land?

Weren't most of the western states federal territories before they became states?

And before that, some other nation's property.

I do wonder, should the Feds get what the land is worth today or some cheaper, non-free market, value?

I say "what it's worth today." They have the option of selling it to highest bidder or keeping it. So that would be "what it's worth today," same as any other federal asset.

Yeah, selling to the highest bidder probably makes sense.

Alaska is the biggest state with the most Federal land.In 1959 it was promised to get a lot of Federal at statehood.Never happened. It has been in the courts since then.

Yes, they were. And part of the deals they struck with the Federal government at statehood was which lands and resources would be under state control and which would remain under the control of the feds.
